HBG: Dr. Prull

Lest you think that the saga of the quarantine will be forever,
I think this is my last post on the quarantine days.
*they are now with us, you know*
But really, it is a testimony to the power of forgiveness and love
that these guys like us at all.
If you see it from their perspective, they came to their forever home and
it was all lovey-dovey for one night then to the vets and ringworm and
then quarantine and then urinary tract infection
*thank Bastet for finding it quickly because the temp vet did not,
and it was probably that she fed them lots of baby food which is not good for cats*
because the schedule also called for copious amounts of drugs
to be given morning and night!
Here we are, visiting, running a business,
and they are alone in a big room next to our studio, with toys and snuggly places
but still alone and the scary sound of the warehouse district and
then of the half-dozen visits a day two were accompanied by the drug crap!
Savitri got wise quickly and stayed at arms length morning and night,
but snuggled and played with us in between.

Anywho, the temp vet was bad
*our beloved Dr. Prull was on vacation how dare she*
and Bastet helped but so did the fact that we are wise parents and insisted
this so-so vet test for the things we thought of…

Dr. Prull is the best and she has guided us through the rest and they are now healthy and happy crazy cats as you all know and now for the fun and silly posts!
*i promise*

Bastet is the Egyptian Cat Goddess…

HBG: Squirt!

For most of my life, cats have been deterred and trained with a squirt gun.
These two are not succumbing!
Yaman loves water… more on that later.
Savitri doesn’t like it but she is so tenacious that only a time out works.
She is stalking Sammy, and they are getting along, but sometimes it is just to much to watch our old Sam being stalked… or she decides she is going to go insane under the studio sofa (this is clawing along the bottom) or some new form of cat craziness.
The squirt will not work!!!  What to do?

SERIOUSLY, ANY SAFE IDEAS?

We are using time outs to calm and change her direction…
That SOMETIMES works!

**i need another way to train them… taking advice!**

Florian Afflerbach, Amazing Artist

I don’t usually post about indie-fundings thangs, but I am doing this, and it is probably the only time you will get a chance to buy Florian’s work.  He died too soon in an accendent, was an amazing artist, and a good guy!  They are trying to raise the money to print a book of his sketches.  Starting at about $45 USA, shipped, I am trying to spread the word.  BTW, you can go see samples of his work on Flickr.

Florian Afflerbach. Der Zeichner

A selection from the 2,000 sketches by the architect, urban sketcher and illustrator of vehicles.

Florian Afflerbach (1980-2016) was a remarkable person and sketcher. His self-chosen job was to revive the art of freehand drawing, most notably for students of architecture, because „the spontaneous and intuitive freehand drawing is capable of authenticating the designer’s idea on paper.“ He coined the sentence: „You can only see well with a pencil“.

Florian was a trained architect and teacher, assistant professor of the Department of Spatial Design and Design at the University of Siegen, as well as assistant professor of the Department Architecture at the University of Dortmund. He was an author, urban sketcher, car enthusiast, urbanist and so much more.

He was torn out of his life too early with just 35 years. Please help us to make his artistic heritage unforgettable!

(and it continues….)

Go buy one!  Buy one for a car enthusiast!  It is an amazing deal, and two weeks to go.

Hahnemühle Post Cards, 5

A second image of Randy’s Gardenia created during the video.

Terry Phillips’ Morning Glories climbing her bird feeder,
showing a bit of the layering process from ink to finish.

Hahnemühle makes a longer post card, which I played with above.
The underlayer was created in yellow Luma watercolors
then masked with Fineline Masking Fluid before greens were added.
Platinum Cassis Black ink outlined the petals then a wet brush
pulled the color into the petal.  The latter was not as successful as I’d hoped —
I am still getting used to these “changing” ink colors.

Finally a deep colored iris.  I underpainted the petals in Noodler’s Polar Brown and Super5 Australia before layering up with watercolors and  Platinum Citrus Black ink.
I find sometimes the Luma liquid watercolors bleed into the paper.
These are very old (no longer made) liquids, and I need to buy some new Martins or some such brand to see if it is because they are old. Occasionally the inks also bleed.
I can’t get a handle on when or why.  I keep playing with them.
I clip my postcards to a rigid piece of cardboard (a RedBubble mailer) in order to keep it laying flat.  They are heavy watercolor stock BUT all paper curls some unless held.
The striation you see in the green background comes from mixing
Platinum Citrus Black ink on the paper with Luma watrcolor…
the black particles sift out, and this interesting effect is born.  Happy accidents!

HBG: Ice Cream Sticks

The ice-cream-stick game.
The only good thing to come from the botched kidney stone surgery!
Began with Jai and Kamala, and now the torch has passed to Yaman and Savitri.
*sammy looks at the sticks, then at us, as if, ‘really?’*
Savitri come running if the basket is even picked up now!

HBG: Scary Things!

It is not nice to be scared but they are so freaking funny when they are…
Yamantaka (who I keep calling Charlie, as in, “Listen Charlie…”) was running pell-mell with his new-found freedom in our studio when he came face to face with the Washington Mutual red piggy bank with the big white eyes.  EEEEK!  I swear, psycho slasher movies and someone jumping out of the closet — he went straight up in the air!
HOW do they do that, ‘copter-style?  STRAIGHT up!

So a page of odd things that scared them…
My Ugg boots turned on its side without my foot in it…
The catnip stuffed felt toys, carrots and shapes (WTH?)…
The sound of the electric toothbrush…
For some incredible reason, Sammy’s favorite cat comb…
The vacuum (well we didn’t get our wish for cats who would let us vacuum them**)…
Mitchell’s guitar (or playing), too funny,
though they finally are getting used to it kinda sorta.

I wish they’d become seriously afraid of the damn toilet.

**we do not try to vacuum the cats… its just a silly thought, because, hair**

HBG: The Back Story

I am sure there are hundreds of amazing and honest foster parents in the world,
but ours wasn’t one of them.  Because of her lies and antics, our guys cost us
roughly a thousand dollars more than they “should” have (given we’d already paid for some things) and cost them and us the stress of the back and forth of a quarantine.

What tipped me off?  Her attitude when I told her the kids had ringworm.  I knew no caring “parent” would deny the possibility of some saying “positive test result” and continue to endanger kittens by taking in MORE!.

They spent six weeks in a room we had set up for an incoming project.
They missed us, and Sammy continued to be depressed, missing what he has always had — cat buddies!  We had to “suit up” (change clothes to go in) and delouse coming out…
two of us three times a day for weeks.

The only good news is that ringwom never killed anyone,
and they are now happily driving us crazy daily.
This includes Sam, who is stalked,
unable to take a dump in peace (the kitten share EVERYTHING),
and generally looks at us with the HELL were you thinking on his fuzzy face?

HBG: Dosha Types

*btw, that is not a rat… it is he with his head under a roll of cotton
trying to find a rattle mouse he thinks went under the roll.
Also, this was written when they had not yet come off quarantine*

They are half-siblings, same dad (the Oops Man cometh twice)
and different Siamese breeder moms.

They are SO different!

She is kapha bodied.
Every day she grows more stout and sturdy,
bigger paws, bigger jaws.
When she stops during play, she plops ungraciously on her side or butt.
she is not as adept at leaping, but makes a good soccer cat.
And also, as a kapha, she is moody, slow to change, and tenacious.
She WILL get what she wants…. and now she wants out of the room!

He is pitta-bodied, slim and fast and fiery.
He is a leaper, fast, a streak of black, graceful.
However, his ears are big bat ears which means the grace he possesses
is offset by the insanity of his huge ears, making him comical.
He wears his heart on a string, growling when he is possessive,
and a big baby snuggler when he is not playing.
He can be distracted from his goals…

*Kapha, Pitta and Vata bodies are within the Vedic medicine tradition.*

HBG: Toilet Paper Box

Building a fort for them reminded me of the forts I built as a kid!
They are so tiny that we built it out of the toilet paper boxes for the studio…
When my mom and I moved into a new house,
the fridge and washer and dryer were delivered in HUGE boxes.
No furniture yet in the living room, and that is where I built my best fort!

They were so rough on this poor box we had to tie it together…
And then their entire life revolved around examining the knots.

All this came to a screaming halt when they peed in the box.
Their foster mother mistook the kittens for puppies,
apparently, and paper trained kittens… ARGH!
Untraining begins!

BTW, painting a black on black slightly  striped young kitten is not easy….

HBG: Savitri Is So Gurlie!

I can say these are gurlie traits because I am one…
You know how women can change their minds?
Be unpredictable?  Seem soft but BE hard as nails?
That’s Savitri…

On the other hand, Yaman wears his heart on his sleeve hair paw!

HBG: Yamantaka Loves Dangly Thangs

All the things we were going to name them… Yamantaka stuck!
He is named after the underworld god AFTER he met Manjushri
and acquired wisdom and discernment.
I know, a lot to lay on that little guys head… but he is sweet and wise and a devil!

I call him Punky most often….

With all the craziness in the world, he is pure joy!

Why Not so Many Posts?

A mini-vacation to move and introduce kitties to Sammy…
going well I might add!  Nose touching yesterday!

A unique opportunity…

A new website coming…. with a shop!

So I am shaking things up a bit… and that takes computer time and
I only have so much before I have to go to the finish room!

Be back soon…

VSW: Hahnemühle Post Cards, 4

More middle-of-the-night playing-with-inks postcards.

In this one the delicate nature of the blossoms went a little awry,
and mostly it was from overdoing the ink layers, then adding watercolors,
and every thing began to moosh around and so I blobbed it.
BIG blobs by accident… and then I needed to do more.

I’m not saying that it looks awful, just not what I wanted.

I rarely redo, but wanted to see if my hunch was right about how I should have handled this, and so went in again with same inks, no watercolors, leaving the field blank (of course I hadn’t blobbed it by accident) and added a touch of waterproof Platinum Carbon…
It is closer to the way I saw it in my mind’s eye.

Randy Boyd’s amazing gardenia, inked….

I love wild mustard fields, great expanses of yellow that crest a hill.
Home home home….

Hood River Strawberries

Summertime in Oregon is announced when the Hood Rivers are ripe.
They have a burst of the sweetest flavor, and they are gone too quickly!

I missed the official Solstice since it came on the 20th this year —
But Happy Solstice a day later!  Hard to believe!

Sketchbook Project, FEAR

This year I participated in the Sketchbook Project out of Brooklyn.
The idea of being part of hundreds of artists and writers creating books on the
topic of Fear or Hope at this time in our country’s history was a calling.
I wanted to do Fear AND Hope, but chose fear as I had to choose.
I slipped some items on hope in the journal anyway.

It is MY journal statement, after all and a time of fear without hope is suicidal!

I became stuck partway through.
I kept expressing the fears I have for our country and lives
then did not want to show them publicly.

The redactions became the point of the journal.

HWB: Boy and Gurl Come to Own Us

My journal  of Boy and Gurl will be told in
the Hahnemühle Watercolour Book,  my spring gift to me!
I wish I’d done this for all my kitties…
but back then it was architectural drawings or big acrylic paintings.
I LOVE watercolor journalling!
And we have a personal little memory book when I’m done!

So tiny… and so long since we had kittens!

They spent their first few days in the bathroom before visiting the vets.
Such amazing cuddlebunnies… cuddled with each other and with us…
In the middle of the night… When you got up to pee…
The joy of feeling tiny claws in your legs.. a way to wake up FAST!

Chives.  Love them in salad.
J.Herbin has two inks in this post, a lovely green and pink.

I forget the name of this daisy-like flower… not a sunflower.

CC’s posies, again, can’t remember the name of them!

Bougainvillea.  Home.

Still working this months Virtual Sketchwalk
