WWM: Giveaway! Cold Press Hahnemühle PostCards

Giving away to two lucky winners
my favorite middle-of-the-night watercolor surfaces!
Cold Press Hahnemühle PostCards!

In honor of the paper I use most often for the World Watercolor Month challenge,
I’m offering TWO prizes of postcard tins!
(Sorry, USA + Canada only please!)

My watercolor for today for World Watercolor Month!

Great layers, bold colors pop on the cold press postcards!

The cold pressed is soooo smooth, just enough tooth!

How do I use them?
I know from experience that peeps LOVE getting a hand painted post card.
I’ve been sending them every other day to my mom and she is the hit of the community!
I have sent them with a stamp like a postcard, but I cover the watercolor with
Gamblin’s Cold Wax Medium for protection from the elements.
I rub it on with my finger…   Not 100% safe but helps!
I admit to sending them in an envelope though… I don’t want to risk the weather!

For more information you can visit my review here.

This giveaway will include:

1 tin Hahnemühle
Cold-Pressed Postcards +
(and few Rough Hahnemühle Postcards for comparison)
A tin with a Pentel waterbrush

A second stab at catching the essence, this time of a poodly dog in a doorway.
Under five minutes, played with where I placed my color for fun.
Still paying attention to the eyes in the end livened up the dog.

WWM: Day 20, Laguna Postcard

Randy Boyd let’s me use his photos of home, Laguna Beach, to paint from.
His images fill me with cheer; I miss home and the beach so much!

Went for fat inked lines and deep tones on this one —
almost reminds me of an “olde tyme” postcard!

WWM: Day 17 Moms Stuff, Sun

My mom’s copper sun hanging in my finish room.

Trying a different route, waterproof inks building them up.
Lexington Grey above…

Brown inks added, De Atramentis Document Brown
and something I mixed up in a waterbrush!

Finally, watercolors added.
And Super5 Frankfurt Grey linework at the end; had to do it!

This is a new paper for me, Harmony.
My review of three papers from Hahnemühle will come shortly!

WWM: Day 16 Moms Stuff, Sun Postcard

Playing around with Robert Oster African Gold; ink-painting!
In the end added lines… I LIKE lines!

This is loosely based on my Mom’s big copper sun from Mexico.
It now hangs in my finish room… Happy Sun!

WWM: Day 15, Canvas Project, Bedlam!

BEDLAM!

I have the word “BEDLAM” for my entry into the Canvas Project 2018

I started with sketches, as I only have one canvas!
I saw Yaman coming at me one night!

Bedlam is when the “kittens” get CRAZY just before bed.
It is their last hurrah, like kids wanting to stay up late.
They are sleeping, but if we don’t wake them they wake at midnight and start…
So we wake them around 10:00 pm: “WAKEY-WAKEY!”

“WAKEY-WAKEY!”

A black head with green-yellow slits rises from the cat tree or the bottom of the bed…
not sure he is willing to do our bidding, we say it again
“WAKEY-WAKEY! WAKEY-WAKEY!” until he gets his sister up.

All hell breaks loose.  They streak around and sometimes jump clear over us until we finally say, “ENOUGH!  Come to bed.”

Then, shockingly, they settle in with us and sleep like logs all night.

When I decided to do this I didn’t think about canvas and watercolors…
And so, getting my sketch onto canvas has been a bit of a trial!

I tried watercolors and they sat on top of the canvas.
I suppose I could have found out how to prime it for watercolors (shellac?)
but I decided to go back in time to acrylics, my fist love, but here is the thing,
BEDLAM was conceived in watercolor,
and you know how picky we artists are when we get a vision?

I lived with the acrylic version for a couple of days.
I am happy with the thin watercolor transparent appearance I managed
on top of the odd canvas… I painted on primed canvases for years with acrylic
and never had problems like this one — the paint didn’t want to adhere.  Very strange.

My last change: I went back and thickened some of the lines on the canvas.

So trial and error, here it is: BEDLAM!

WWM: Day 12 Moms Stuff Dragonfly

This was a garden decoration, and my mom always had great flower gardens.

I saw quite a bit of pink in the greys, and so went with the mauve-pink.
I used Super5 Frankfurt ink for the waterproof lines.
I sketched 2 fluid ink colors that would move when water touched them,
Diamine Grey ink and De Atramentis Tobacco ink.

When I hit them with water they moved across the pinkish watercolor.
Not quite what I imagined but a fun experiment.
I may try another.

Ink as watercolor, in this case Robert Oster African Gold.
I think I can stretch this World Watercolor Month to include this ink painting
on Hahnemühle Cold Pressed Post Cards.

WWM: Day 10, VSW Rockport Sailboat

I sketched the sailboat in ink and added shadow in waterproof grey ink.

I’m not a person who can ever be in a boat for more than a few moments —
I get deadly motion sickness!
I love their shape and detail and craftsmanship!
They intimidate me, and so, of course, I had to try one…

I admit I am not as happy with this sketch… Feels staid.

Thanks to Tom Brudzinski for the great images from which to sketch!

WWM: Day 9 Moms Stuff, Pelican

I love this pelican.
More than most objects of mom,
this and the whale
(which someone in her building
STOLE while we were packing)
will be the best of my mom and I.
She loved the ocean, we moved
there when I was about 9,
and every bit of time off with her
was spent looking for whales
or pelicans from the bluffs or shells
(which I also did by myself).
She bought these after I left home
from an artist in Laguna Beach.

I am sad not to have the whale,
but happy to have the pelican.
I know I will paint him many times over.

Mitchell liked the first one I did, below, so he will have that one.
The other is going to my mom….

These are not on Hahnemühle Post Cards, but on a stack of leftover card stock
that is unknown.  I am going to use it up painting things to send to Mom.

This is just in time for Moment Sketchers!

WWM: Day 8, VSW Rockport

Thanks to Tom Brudzinski for the great images from which to sketch!
Today I tackled a sweet image of a walkway to a home with many flowering plants.
Almost all of these sketches are a wonderful escape to unwind
after work day and/or day talking to nurses…
they may not be my best work but they are a saving grace and I will link
them to this time in my mind’s eye — all the sketches this month!
Sketching can save lives — MINE!

My Sketchbook Project Is LIVE and Touring!

My entry into the Sketchbook Project is live online at the Brooklyn Art Gallery!
Their scanning leaves a little to be desired
(they left out pages and scrunched pages)
so I published it again, below.
It is touring the country as we speak.  Very cool!

The sketchbook: I set myself design parameters, that is, I worked with the
poor paper and made it sing as best I could, and used only a few other items tipped in or pasted in, mostly because of the writing going straight through the thin paper.

Things you can do to help our oceans:
I include a good list of what needs to be done to change where we are headed.
And lest you think you can’t do what has to be done, it is only a matter of how much of a polite pain in the backside you want to become.  It is not enough to choose wisely, you need to talk about your choices so that becomes an important conversation you have with others.  Supermarkets do listen… be the squeaky wheel.  And while being polite, say these things so others can overhear them… Then they become interested.  I believe MOST people (not politicians but normal people) will do the right thing given the chance.

I’ve been battling our local chain for years for to make a choice about Certified  Humane meats, which are also usually organic (or lower impact) and sustainably raised.
I talked to the various meat workers about it, even if they rolled their eyes (but not when the lines were deep) and gave them information on what I wanted them to buy.  I wrote letters.  This month, they are finally dropping Draper’s (bruised chickens = tortured chickens) and moving to Smart Chicken, which is Certified Humane, and affordable.
I didn’t say cheap, but $3/lb for organic humane chicken is not bad…
We eat less meat now anyway than we used to eat, make it stretch into other
bean and rice dishes, and so two chickens can make six days worth of meals..
You can make a difference… but you have to get fired up.
Reduce your carbon footprint!
Protect endangered species and other animals in your area!
