Akkerman all the way from THE Hague!

Yes, they call it “THE Hague”… who knew?

I did a favor for a friend and she sent me a thank-you gift.
A totally cool and beautiful thank-you gift with some silly surprises in it.

I swear to goddess it was the thought that she thought of me
while doing this that made me gooey inside…
however, the lovely bottle of Akkerman Delft Blue ink didn’t hurt!
These bottles with the tilty marble are a fascination!

For now, it is in a blue Jinhao Shark, chomping its way around my other pens!

Oh, and I can’t forget — a sample of Mabel Dodd Blackbird “Puffin” ink was also cool —
It is amazing ink and now I am going to have to try her inks beyond samples!

SoCS: Soul/Sole

I  journal and do morning stream of consciousness exercises, and
I’m again participating in Linda Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday.
I write to a timer, 15-20 minutes, no editing except spelling, and of course I add my art!
You can do it too!
The Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “soul/sole.” Write about the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the word “yawn.”

Soulmate came to mind immediately, but what can I say about it?
I am blessed with the best relationship I can imagine.
He is not perfect; I am not perfect.  Perfection is not the issue,
and maybe so many people are trying to find that perfect person… not the way.

I did my own soul work for twenty years before we met,
lucky to have put my foot on the path right after college.
Righting my stupidity as best I could, seeing my poisons,
all so I could be a better person for the people around me…
It is not that I thought I was a terrible person, but when you look inside, you know what stupidity lurks in your head.  Anger, envy, coveting, comparing, addiction.
Whatever, as one teacher said, “Put no mind before your own.”
You know what you need to work on.  My work is not over, and
I have moved through so much crap to get to honesty with myself.

That is about the time when I met him.  I was at a crossroads and looking for my sole purpose, thinking that either I was going to be with someone again (dead former husband) or I was going to move to where my teacher was and live there.
Be a monk.  Monkess?  (cracking up, “hey hey we’re the monkees…”)

He walked into my front door.  Nobody ever used that door.  But he did.
And he stayed, and we knew.  He had also been on a soul‘s path.
At the time we met his was a soulless grind, broken by the flowers in the park.
WE KNEW.  Not one or the other, but we knew.
“So there you were, inside of me all along.”  I can’t remember who wrote that.

Twenty years later, at a time when life around us is pure shit most of the time
and there is almost no good news, we have each other, a blessing.
Maybe that is why they call it soulmate.  A blessing.

For the rules, go to Linda’s blog;  feel free to join the fun!

Bright Ideas: Giraffe Pin

I’ve always loved giraffes.
Stephen bought this for me before Junior High
One of those lovely gold-tone enameled pins,
and I sketched it before I sold it so I’d have that memory.

I paired it with a quote from Pema Chodron because Stephen introduced me to Buddhism… put my foot on the path… though I introduced him to Ani Pema.

Bright Ideas: Pansy Plate

Pansy was our third kitty growing up, straight off my grandparents ranch.
She was born to the palest tiger kitty before we had a chance to spay her,
and what a wonder she was, long haired and looking just like this —
A huge pansy face.  She bonded immediately with Shi-shu, a tortie,
when Shei-shu arrived, and we had four cats!

Sorry this plate has been broken but it has also been loved.
I can’t get rid of the damn thing!  Keeping this one from mom’s stuff.

Killing Winter with Orange

I had the very nicest favor done to me —
A friend sent me the TWSBI I’ve wanted the most!  ORANGE!
Not sold in the USA!!!!
Nice that the Japanese postal service color coordinated their package with my pen!
I really love these crazy TWSBIs… they hold a huge amount of ink.
It is unusual for me to buy so many pens in a short time but they come and go —
you have to get the colors while you can.

I filled it with two samples of Robert Oster mixed —
Orange Zest and Orange, both of which I want!
Using up samples in this way is fun and I get colorful entries in my work journal.

This winter has gotten to me.  I’ve never wanted winter end so much.
The constant threat of snow storms from NOAA, our ever-changing schedule…
And so dang cold!  So I can get behind “killwinterwithorange, popular this year.

The last year I’ve had lovely warm-colored pens come into my life,
from the TWSBI to the Diplomat to the Edison Collier.
*last two from my sweet husband*

I love drawing pens… They are a technical exercise
and take me back to Big Daddy Ed Bowen’s high school drafting classes,
except I loosen them up — but still want to get the parts right!

I am a huge fan of ORANGE, and had not even realized how many orange pens
I’ve collected, especially if you include the lovely rose golds!
I am not a snob… my pens range from $3 to $160 (gift),
but most fall into the under $40 category.  Happy colors!
*before you ask, left to right: TWSBI, Pilot Metropolitan, 2 Lamy‘s, Edison Collier,
2 Fountain Pen Revoltions (I will write about the Himalyan when my ink arrives),
a Knox for Mitchell, and 2 Jinhaos.

Cat Squares, 7 Puck Redo

9. PUCK, REDO (See post on the Puck.)

When your human screws up the toss…
You smack the puck on the bed to say, “got it!”
That’s their cue to throw it again.

The disappointment on his face when it drops a few feet in front of him is palpable>
I feel it too.
I am glad he doesn’t walk away in disgust but gives me another chance.
Kind, puck-loving tiny panther.

Got the Blues!

This is the post where I bore you guys
with my musings on my new passion for blue inks.

I’ve developed a passion for blue inks.
*I am laying the blame on Robert Oster for the many $$$ I’ve spent on blues*
Don’t get me wrong, I like blue, especially turquoise, but not so much in ink.

I bought my Diamine Blue Velvet on Brian Goulet’s suggestion,
and to go with my Ultramarine Blue shiny Lamy Al-Star…
and a bit later Diamine Regency Blue because it was so perfect for my lovely Jinhao pen…
*I think it is really a purple, frankly*
That was the end of that for three years.
Since discovering Robert Oster’s lovely blues I’ve added many blues,
including two more bottles Diamine blues,
Blue-Black and Imperial Blue, both because they were on sale at an obscene price
(get them while you can — huge bottles of great inks at closeout!

*Who can resist inks on sale?*
Both of these are good inks, and Blue-Black has some water-resistance.

*these next three are on my wishlist!  so many blues!*

I wasn’t interested In Robert Oster inks… I didn’t buy many inks at the time:
I was quite happy with my waterproof inks

Then I was gifted with three bottles.  The ink was delicious.
Torquay ink, was in the batch, and instant love!
I was just getting into shades of greys and I bought Thunderstorm (blue-grey),
and several samples, along with several blues from other brands.
*hence they all owe a debt of gratitude to Robert Oster*
Australian Sky Blue now lives in my TWSBI Eco… I carry it everywhere!
Honestly, I could buy them all — or close to it.
I love writing in my calendar with his lovely variations of ocean blues;
takes me home to the Pacific Ocean in Laguna Beach!

*btw, these are going into the greens… but some say blues…*

Why Robert Oster?  He loves complex colors.
At first glance you think “a bunch of turquoise”
BUT I suggest you buy samples and start playing!
I pitted his inks up against some Japanese (and far more expensive) popular inks
recently and his pigments are more complex and beautiful…

Also, moving away from waterproof changed how I paint with inks…
Line drawings and then water to follow to move the inks,
or adding water to ink in a waterbrush.

BTW, I learned that different retail outlets carry different colors from manufacturers.
I find that some retailers sense of color resonates more with an artistic palette,
some more with writers who want to be able to write legal briefs…
I advise artists to shop at Vanness
(their sense of color makes them my favorite ink color peeps)
and Goulet and Jetpens and now Birmingham….

  I love Birmingham’s Pennsylvania Railroad Boiler Steam;
it is one of the colors that had me going back for more inks at Birmingham.
It is a dark blue-grey, has lovely shading proprieties,
and is a bit water resistant — a nice surprise!

Andrew Carnegie Steel Blue also has water-resistant qualities.
It is a lovely blue, and when I saw them side by side I wondered if Boilersteam started as Andrew Carnegie but had black added… my simplistic words for the darkening…
I see it in the sketch in the middle using Boilersteam.

An update after the fact is a new blue gifted to me, George Ferris World’s Fair Blue, a lovely blue in honor of George Ferris, who invented the Ferris wheel.

Looking at three blue-grey inks, can you see the differences?
Thunderstorm has a touch of green but undertones of red-purple in the blue grey:
Boilersteam is a lovely greyed denim, and has the staying power of a waterproof with linework but then can move color — this is nice for sketching;
Grey Seas is a truer ultramarine when it begins, but then has lovely undertones of purple.
*How does he get the undertones?*

I draw with waterproof blue inks, mostly ocean or city drawings.
I have a new waterproof ink I like, the blue Marlene sketchINK (Rohrer & Klinger).
The ink itself was no big deal but the one color is good;
it is the clearest true blue waterproof ink,
and so rivals the Super5 Atlantic for my attention.
The DeAtramentis blues all go a bit purple or a bit grey — not bad,
but I just don’t use them much except with dip pens, preferring the first two.

When nubs get together and talk ink, especially blue ink, inevitably
Noodler’s Bay State Blue is discussed.  This blue has super dye qualities and
you never get it out of anything it touches.
Having tried Noodler’s inks, and not being a fan of his pens or his inks (inconsistent),
and never wanting to permanently stain my pens,
I was curious about alternatives.  I bought a sample to try next to
some of my favorite true blues for depth of color…
Gotta tell you, Bay State is a lot of hype.
Diamine Blue Velvet and Monteverde Horizon rival it as a deep ultramarine blue.

Blues, random samples,
above, that I liked.

Some I will eventually
buy in bottles, especially Akkerman and one of
KWZ’s Azures.  I look for
well-behaved inks, shading,
deep or vibrant colors.

These days I am also
mixing samples to have a little fun in my work pens, right, which is Robert Oster marine and Deep Sea mixed.
TWSBI will take two samples!

So what blue inks are always in a pen, ready to draw blue whales and starry nights
and make important appointments and remember life-changing events?

Mostly, Robert Oster, the King of the Blues.

SoCS: Abashed

I  journal and do morning stream of consciousness exercises, and
I’m again participating in Linda Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday
I write to a timer, 15-20 minutes, no editing except spelling, and of course I add my art!
You can do it too!
The Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “abash.” Write about the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the word “abash.”

I had to search for the meaning of abashed..
It is the strangest word, because it doesn’t sound like what it means.
It sounds like an opposite word, or a violent word…
but, disconcerted, put off by someone’s actions” I can relate to…

I am disconcerted by what is happening politically in the USA right now.
Completely thrown by the the bigotry, violent speech, hatred toward women
*and then we had to endure this stupid platitude celebration day yesterday*
and the outright lies of politicians on both sides.
And the incredibly poor reporting of corporate news.
Just this week, what the Muslim Representative said was not reported.
Had it been factually reported, half the country might have agreed with her.
but instead they made it out that she spoke like a terrorist against the Jews…
We had to search deep to find it until finally Chris Hayes showed clips of all her speeches,
and even then he chose only the inflammatory parts to discuss, but thankfully,
you could see her words like ticker tape below the speech he was talking over.
this taking only selective words and doing it with the idea of changing what is said….
What is their agenda but to divide the citizens to drive ratings?
Corporate news.  No fourth estate.  And we the people are asleep and don’t care,
don’t demand, and in the end, we may lost this country over it.

AH, I am abashed that the news people do not demand of their stations
that they tell the whole truth, the facts, just the facts…  finally, the word.
I am horrified at the complete stupidity of we the people…
we need to turn the stations off, to not buy the rags,
to demand that they stop reporting like they are writing for the Inquirer…
Some of what passes for serious news is as stupid as
“Elvis Impregnated an Alien”

Completely utterly depressed at what is going on.
and it is not a matter of parties, because the Dems went after her all because of their financial backers.   Follow the money, see who is running our country.
Gads I hope next Saturday I get an uplifting word…

Bright Ideas: Green Tara Om

When I saw Gaspéite the first time
I thought it was dyed.
How could anything from the earth
be so very spring green?

I made these to be worn together
— the heishi is large and so are
the beads.  The stone is brittle
and hard to cut smaller.

Writing is what is on the
back of the Green Tara medal.

Bright Ideas: Green Tara Gau

This Bright Ideas journal is so rag-tag now…
bleed-through inks, watercolor tries that soaked in and didn’t work,
and even greasy-foodstuffs from drawing in cafes.

When I started back into it I forgot how crazy thin the paper was and
used my medium nib Platinum Carbon pen… not for detail on this paper!

I love these necklaces, and wear them together;
the stones are almost the color of this paper.

Writing is what is on the back of the gau;
gau is another name for a prayer-box.

Cat Squares, 6: Bottle Cap

8. BOTTLE CAP

Ours are the most inquisitive cats.
They are easily bored and go looking for new toys.
Savitri loves this… It doesn’t work well so out loss is her gain.
I often find it in my shoe (her favorite place to stick her head).

I can hear her now, her muffled, “mmmrr” cuz’ it’s in her mouth.

Buyer Beware

Just saying, that perhaps it is a good idea to buy from companies you know.
I choose Goulet, Vanness, Birmingham, Jetpens.
There are others.  A deal is often not a deal.
I have been burned on eBay.

SoCS: Celestial

I  journal and do morning stream of consciousness exercises, and
I’m again participating in Linda Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday
I write to a timer, 15-20 minutes, no editing except spelling, and of course I add my art!
You can do it too!
The Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is
a word beginning with “cele-.” I choose celestial.

.

I work with lunar energy.

I don’t know when I become interested in celestial bodies, but the one that
interests me the most if our sister planet, the moon.
Her pull on my body was felt much more when I was younger, pre-menopause, especially when I moved out into the country and lived with far less electricity around me.
It may be then that I connected with the idea of the Native American Moon Lodge,
and the idea that women who were menstruating went into the Moon Lodge,
not, as many of our patriarch wold believe, because they were dirty,
but because they thought that this was their time to dream, to have vision to imagine.  When they were through, they came out and the tribe listened to
what they had to say, and found ways to put these dreams into action.
It blew my mind when I found out that they also roughly did this together —
bled together.  Seems the moonlight ran their internal menstruating clocks.
Being surrounded by non-stop electricity in out culture,
this doesn’t happen anymore.

Anyhow, I think this was the first time I tied creativity and productivity to the lunar cycle, and began looking for it in other cultures and traditions — what I do —
I like looking for the connecting links in the traditions.
I found some vestiges of this information in other traditions, the idea that women, especially, but men too, were tied to our sister planet.  Think about it,
the Moon controls the watery tides and all cultures plant by the lunar cycle.

I used to take the New Moon off and simply be quiet —
a day or two right before and on the New Moon I would meditate,
sleep and eat rich warming stews or rice casseroles.  I don’t know where that last came in but they are a comfort, and can be cooked ahead of time.
I try to have us take days off around that time in the business
but there are times when the heaven conspire and we can’t — t
his Monday-Wednesday is a good example, when all the crazy storms have
pushed appointments out on days when we would normally take it down or take off.
If we can’t take off then at least I try to have quiet days in the studio,
no phones answered, no electronics.

I seem to get sleepy around the Dark of the Moon — the days just before and on the New Moon.  I want to be quieter and sleep in and have everyone leave me alone!

Bell went off — time to stop!  There is much more to this and
I am writing about working with this energy.

For the rules, go to Linda’s blog;  feel free to join the fun!

Sharing a Carousel Event!

Carousel horses have always delighted, even in the midst
of virtual games and E-ticket rides;
most of us don’t stop and look at them,
but are seduced by the music and the action and the lights.

I started a group of artists from around the world who paint from images
through a virtual meeting where they all paint a place together and enjoy the company
that comes from sharing.  Each month a different place is chosen and the
Virtual Sketchwalk group makes art from the photos offered for that walk.

This month we did images from the Jantzen Beach Carousel!

To see the many images from this
month’s walk, visit the business blog!

Mount Kailash

Mount Kailash.
That lone figure is a spiritual friend of mine… same teachers.
She did what I will never do (broken body here) which is to trek to this amazing space.
I’ve had this image on my wall for many years; something just moved me when I saw it.

Still dealing with depression.
Glad I’ve been down this road before and know what to do…
and because I am open about it I also know how many people suffer from it,
all the time, or from time to time.
I share it because I KNOW there are so many of you dealing with this —
It is a depressing time for anyone in our  country who has a conscience.

You are not alone.  I am not alone.

Inspiration is a photo by Donna Ferris.
Now if my dyslexic mind can manage to spell Kailash!
