Reclining Buddha

W14 6 17 Buddha Head Laos_2My feeble attempts to paint watercolor with no pencil marks continue.  This is a Reclining Buddha from the Buddha Park in Laos (Wiki image bottom.)   I had pencil/pen sketched the head a while back — now I did a very quick watercolor from the sketch.  Eh.  But I continue to try, no guidelines.  A bit like riding with no training wheels in the beginning.  Unlike the image at the bottom of my last post, this was very quick.  Not many layers, just go and see what happens!

Recipe: Lemon Ginger Garlic Sweet Hot Pepper Broiled Chicken

This was a yummy dinner!

D. Katie Powell's avatarkatwritesfood

W14 6 24 LEMON PEPPER CHICKEN 600dpi_2Some people despise prepared garlic; I cannot always take the time for fresh garlic and so, I always have a bottle of Christopher Ranch Organic Chopped Garlic on hand. Ditto, if you don’t have fresh lemons by all means use bottled lemon juice and zest.  Is there a price for substitutions?  Yes, but if that is the time you have or the ingredients on hand, I won’t call the Chef Police.

  • 2-4 organic, humanely raised chicken breast (the butcher will cut up chickens for you if you ask)
  • 2 organic lemons for juice and zest (take 1-3 thin slices from the middle of each before juicing for presentation)
  • 1 organic lime (optional, again, 1-3 thin slices for presentation)
  • 2 t Pepper Pesto  (use hot or less hot to your liking)
  • 1 thumb of organic ginger, peeled and diced
  • 1 t chopped garlic, or 2-3 fresh cloves
  • 1/3 c organic olive…

Students Teaching Students, 1st Month

w #1 6 2 under things 9 copyI love to continually learn, going where the uncomfortable edge is; this led me to say yes when asked to join a small group of artist from around the world who were willing to try teaching each other and seeing where it took us.  Jorge Royan (both of JR Sketches and Jorge Royan Photography) was our fearless leader in the first stages, and he started the teaching series by having us work on composition.

I thought I knew a lot about composition; turns out that I knew a little, and learned a tremendous amount.  I shot the image, left, and from there began to draw and then add watercolor.  I made a mistake when painting, and screwed up the image altogether (I left out a leg.)  But I liked my watercolor usage, and that was a positive for me.

W14 1 SKYPE UNDER TABLE 6 copyW14 1 SKYPE UNDER TABLE 7 B&W copyI was satisfied — AAACK, that is until the gang got hold of my image!  (Trust me, they were not picking on me; critiques are for learning.)

Jorge turned it grey, so I could see that the entire image had similar values, which translates into a flat painting.  There was no narrative to my image, no story being told, because I had not directed the visitor’s eye to what was important.

Another artist, Marie Flood, took the liberty of greying some areas to show what the narrative might be if I made the choice as to what the viewer noticed.  This also taught me a lot about controlling the narrative.

W14 1 SKYPE UNDER TABLE 7 Marie played with copyWhile listening to the discussions, I sketched.  I looked at images I had already taken and cropped my own.  I began to see what they meant.  This is not the best example, but you can see that the vase is important.

We spent a couple of weeks cropping images.  One of the images that caught my eye was by Ellen Darby (of Baby Bulldog).  It is a lovely photograph of the Baltimore waterfront.  Crop, crop and crop some more!  It may seem tedious, but look at how the image changes as it is cropped!

web market food courtFrom there we sketched the next week.  I chose the waterfront image, as did Robert Dodd.

I started with a simple line sketch in ink, and then added watercolor.  I had two goals in choosing this sketch:

  • I wanted to draw buildings without looking like an architect drawing buildings, so balancing that line between detail and freedom w14 6 26 Ellen Darby's 300dpi copy(I am showing you one of my old line drawings for those who do not know what i mean),
  • I continue to practice watercolor, this time,  reflections.

Robert Dodd’s final version is below mine.  Having never taken art classes, I found it fascinating to see what another artist would do with the same exact photograph to work from!

W14 6 26 Ellen Darby's 300dpi 2 copy
The beauty of the class is that we can ask the other artists how they did this or that.  In my case, I wanted to learn about how to do reflections.  I was fairly happy with my watery reflections, but liked the depth of color on Robert’s.

10492436_753899404661758_6004570921603049912_nAlso, the ability to see both the subject that another artist was working from — in other words, their available visual perception — versus how I might have painted the same subject, is invaluable to me.  Even with out attempting the drawing I am learning.  Fahmi Kahn (Sketchbook Magic) chose another of Robert’s images below, and it was one I was drawn to but chose not to sketch, as I had no way to approach it.  The liberties she took in her cropping were a great lesson, especially as I loved the curve of the tire and the pop of color!

Below, another of Robert’s images, and her rendition of it.  In this one, I also attempted the sketch.  My goal was to work the entire image without sketching — a huge leap for me.  I simply laid on colors as Robert suggested, allowing them to dry in between.  I am not completely satisfied with the results, but enjoyed the process.  It helps to continue to look at the image, not assume that it looks a certain way.

W14 6 29 Dodd's Train Image 1

I find that anytime I stretch, even if I hate the result, if I learn something it was worth it.  I am so happy to have done a piece with NO sketching underneath!  YAY!

There are other artists, each offering so much.  I will post again in a month to show the next level of progression — and include them too!  Thanks to Fahmi and Ellen and Robert for letting me show their images!

Dark of the Moon, She Dreams

She is one of my best watercolors to date, where I was able to paint what I had in my head.
For awhile I will still be reblogging my LunarMoondae site, in preparation for the classes I will teach.  Have a Sleepy New Moon!

W14 6 10 She Dreams During the Dark of the Moon 4 copy

This moonth, as I worked my cycle, I found I had few words and painted as much as possible.  I struggled in the beginning with what and how to teach lunar journaling.

I have journaled since my first “Dear Diary” and drawn in my architectural journals.
I only recently began “art journaling,” the new phrase for an old idea.  In naming it you create it in a new light, make it a something where before it was just what happened when an artist had a journal and doodled or recorded what they saw or what they felt.

Not having the words for the class, I had to fall back on what I do when I am not writing and have the luxury of wet paint near me; I painted.  In painting with watercolors, in working through the frustrations of a new medium (I have far far to go),
I had…

Living the Rich Life

Now that school’s out, every time I leave my apartment I’m accosted by a kid who wants to do art with me.  I offer an art class every week for kids in the Bridge Meadows neighborhood.  For a few kids, I also have weekly one on one time to work on art and books and stories.  But it’s not quite enough now that summer is here.

I know I’ve had this opportunity to become popular with kids because of my unique living situation here at Bridge Meadows.  We are an intentional community organized to support families adopting 3 or more children out of the foster care system.  On our city block in Portland, Oregon, we have 9 single family homes, and apartments for seniors who provide support for the families. We seniors get a sense of purpose; the children get a sense of permanence.  There are about 30 kids under the age of 16 here.

In any other neighborhood, I might not know any of them, but here, I am welcome to form bonds with all of them.  Their parents know I’ve been vetted — I’ve passed a criminal background check and gotten training on how to work with children with challenging backgrounds.  I’ve been here over 2 years now and I’ve seen children grow from being distrustful and anxious to being playful and creative.  It’s an amazing transformation and I feel so blessed to help open creative channels for them. (Continue to finish!)

Sitting Buddhas

W14 6 17 Buddha Sitting _2Sitting Buddha can be Shakyamuni, a host of Tibetan deities,
but I am including the female Buddha above.
I love her peaceful face and head; she looks like she is dressed in bright silks.
These and others were created as I was sitting with pain.

Buddha Faces

This week I was off my game — drugs do not make for better art, and I hurt my hip.
So for better or worse, I decided to draw and paint Buddha’s head.
I have several statues, which makes it easier, as I have a still model.
I want to paint very abstract renditions of his face, but this was NOT the time
for that, so I played.  I admit to tossing a few.
These are acceptable.  Below, Moody Buddha!

Quan Yin Sits

W14 6 9 Quan Yin Sits 1Blue ink with Cocoiro pen and waterbrush (lightly) on Okima OE NOTES sketchbook.
Learning to be faster and less structured, less pencil, more ink.

Then I played with her in watercolors: Daniel Smith and Golden’s QoR.
I enjoyed hitting a new palette today, bright pinks and maroon.
Gemstone, transparent and opaque watercolors: Sleeping Beauty Turquoise,
Hematite, Quinacridones, Cobalt Blues, Sap Greens, and of course,
Lapis Lazuli and Caput Mortem and Indanthrone for the sky.
I am not used to working with opaque paints — I like transparent paints best.
At one point she was too dark and murky,
and I tried removing paint by adding water.
Then I played with painting with water over dried colors in several.

It’s all an experiment, and speaking of Zen,
having child’s mind is best in all things creative:
inquisitive, play-full, a grand game where nobody wins and it goes on and on.

From the Guardian, on Art Conservation

This is an interesting video on Painting Conservation, which I found through my husband, in an article in the Guardian:  Restoration reveals hidden whale in 17th-century Dutch painting.  It is interesting to me not only from a conservation standpoint, but also from the changes in how we look upon artworks over the centuries.

I Say Goodbye to a Beloved Kitchen Tool

Love my niece; Loved the basting brush she gave me long ago!

D. Katie Powell's avatarkatwritesfood

W14 6 7 Heathers Basting Brush copyMy niece Heather gave me this funny wire basting brush when I was 19 (she was 11) and moving into my first apartment.  I didn’t think much of it at the time; I wasn’t that good a cook yet and so it wasn’t obvious to me the benefits of the brush.  It is not an expensive brush, but oh, what a great brush it was.  It was never beautiful, so never was allowed on my architecturally informed counter.  It was my little secret, and I ALWAYS rummaged about to find it for every marinade and very barbecue.

The beige (hate beige) plastic (not fond of plastic) bell that covers the brush can be pushed back for cleaning, and so this ingenious brush can be completely cleaned of all the residue from the barbecue.  (Otherwise these brushes get pretty disgusting.)  the bristles were exactly as stiff as they needed to be…

The Waxing Quarter, and She is Painting the Ocean

I love the woman celebrating the gibbous moon!

As the light grew,
She used the Ocean to paint
Her emotional body.

I hadn’t planned it, but this moonth I am painting my cycle.

Here we are at the First Quarter, and I wake in the night with Booby Gurl dancing her way across the pages.

I didn’t name her, by the way.

I had tea with a friend
who dubbed her Booby Girl.
I like Booby Gurl better.
Spelling is important,
like Anne with an “e.”

She comes to me in deep watery colors, talking in poetry, of all things, wrapped in words, Susanissima has had her effect
on me, encouraging me to
speak the  words of my heart.

She asked the Moon
if she could paint the Ocean
the blues she saw in her dreams.

Urban Pastel

W14 2 9 PASTEL SHOLI 1dtlI still am not fond of pastels, but managed to create a piece I like enough to sell or frame from a photo I took of the old building wall across the street from Shoji, our favorite sushi bar, in Portland.

I like the subtle colors and the overall composition.  I often take pictures of odd textures in both urban and country setting — paint peeling, gridded steel gates.  It is one way I begin to generate ideas for my paintings.
