It’s been revitalized with a barista

It was a hot day to sketch.
Pyramid Juices was once made in
Ashland Oregon before it was bought out —
now it is down the road from our studio.
The brewery next door, Pacifica (candles),

make the NW smell good, of food and fruit

Gratitude Journal: Summer Bounty

W15 7 7 GRTITUDE JOURNAL 002Summer suddenly appeared after my medical hibernation!

Being on drugs for months is like hibernating . . . the world goes on and you are unaware!
When I “woke” it was summer and Portland was in that lovely state of not-too-hot
(soon to change with that early damn heat wave)
and every possible amazing fresh fruit available from vendors at the PSU Market.

Fraud: Be aware

NOTE: IF you want to see if your items are also on Wallpart.com,
check through AnonyMouse, a service that allows you to look without them tracking you.  Wallpart (spoken of below) is a phishing company.

From Jackie Morris’s blog, an artist of beautiful paintings.
I know they also ripped off Cathy Johnson.

Taking action.

It was brought to my attention recently that a company called Wallpart.com were selling my images online. They do not have and never have had my permission to do this.

Not only do they have my work, almost 1000 pieces, offered for sale but they also have the work of thousands of other artists. Before you click on the link above to see if they have your work remember this, they are a Phishing site. They will gather information, from email addresses to credit card details so DO NOT fill in their forms complaining they are using your images without permission. They know this. They don’t care. And get off their site fast, because you don’t know what forms of malware might be lurking.

I know they have images from Erin Keen, Karin Lillamy of Celestine and the Hare, Nancy Suttcliffe, Catherine Hyde, Jean Haines and many, many others.

It would seem that they have harvested these images from facebook, websites etc. All are low resolution. None would print off to give a viable product, but that’s not really what Wallpart seem to be about.

They run google adds on their website. This will give them a source of revenue. They are also, maybe, just taking payment from people, gathering credit card details etc. Who knows. The very least they are doing is attempting to steal from artists by offering their work for sale.

If you are an artist take a look at their site and if they have your images on the website then report them to Action Fraud, either online or by phone. Talk to your network of artists, friends, make them aware of the site. Reach out to your followers, buyers and supporters and tell them under NO circumstances  purchase anything from Wallpart, explaining why. The more people who take action, the more people who talk about this,  the more chance there will be of shutting them down.

They are a company based in Russia in Kostrom. Their current ISP is ENOM, but they have been moved 4 times already. You can write to Enom, I have, but received no joy there. Spread the word as much as you can to make people aware that these people are thieves. With luck it will stop anyone buying from them. Write to the Arts Council, your local MP, Baroness Neville-Rolfe ( Parliamentary Undersecretary of State and Minister for Intellectual Property).

Why should this matter?

1. I work hard to create the work I do, and am lucky to earn a fair living but many artists struggle in these times, and it is not right for these people to profit from our work. It is theft.

2. I have worked hard to build up a following for my work, not ‘fans’ as such, but people who engage with me as an artist. Along with this comes a level of trust, so when people see these images, know me, and my work, they trust the site. I don’t want people to be lured into parting with their credit cards details.

3. I have publishers who I work with including companies like Graffeg who have invested time and money into bringing out a range of cards, and hopefully soon posters of my work. They pay me a royalty and they have in house staff who depend on their sales for their income. Sites like this can put at risk legitimate companies like Graffeg who also sell online by undermining people’s confidence in purchasing online.

4. I hate to see my work alongside images of soft porn, ugly images.

So please spread the word. At the end of the day I don’t think these people are taking money directly from artists with their business practice, but what they do undermines and demeans us all.

More at Taking Action.

USk: MPF Conservation’s NW Neighborhood

W15 7 6 USk NW NICOLAI INDUSTRIAL 002I haven’t sketched outdoors much lately.  I wondered what I might make of our buildings.
Our studio is in an industrial area in NW Portland.
This is the approach from the freeway.
We share space in the building with Portland Opera’s stage crew and Action Video.

Our studio spaces are along the western side of the building.
That’s my finish room waaaaaaay down there on the top floor.

Across the street is Rejuvenation.  I’d love to own that beautiful Building!

W15 7 9 USk NW NICOLAI INDUSTRIAL 002W15 7 6 USk NW NICOLAI INDUSTRIAL 003We overlook Grimm’s studio and Calbag, a dirty metal recycling center that drops heavy metals all over.  I cringe whenever I see someone picking berries from their property — Have a little metal dust with those berries?  We watch Grimm’s carny come and go when they are on location.  A caravan of long trailers leave up 26th Ave early in the morning;
I am often in the studio by 5am. We don’t see them coming back unless we are at the studio very late.  I stood in front of their studio entrance to draw this view,
looking back at our upholstery studio.  Our studio is on the upper right of the building;
Mitchell and my computers sit and we can look out toward the Willamette River.

Grimm’s studio entrance is unimpressive.
Only the guard shack betrays something that needs guarding!

Gratitude Journal: One

W15 6 27 GRATITUDE JOURNAL 003Now that I have published the Healing Journal I can move on to happier things,
or at least a different reality than the awfulness of the first quarter of this year!

Mitchell brought me beautiful sunflowers, my favorite.
The card featured a mandala made from photos of sunflowers.
Happy beautiful, and a perfect way to start my new gratitude journal.

I give thanks every day for my Mitchell.
Thanks for the experiences that made him who is his;
Thanks that I am able to love him every day;
Thanks for the love he shows me.

Love is a verb.

The Healing Journal

Note:  The Healing Journal in its entirety
has been mostly removed with just a few images left.

W15 HEALING JOURNAL MAY JUNE 001This journal started out as a journal to record positive uplifting thoughts to speed my healing on what was to be a five week journey to rid my kidneys of large stones.  The surgeries were in two stages.  The urologist was not sure he would get all the stone out in the time I was to be under, and so a second was scheduled.  At that time he would also then clean my left kidney.  (Stamped images were a gift from Cathy Johnson.)

It didn’t go well, however, after leaving my personal journal
up for a few months I’ve decided to take it down.
Those interested can contact me for information or images.

W15 HEALING JOURNAL MAY JUNE 005Bottom Line: Ditch doctors who do not listen.

“I bow down to hurt.  It is hurt that makes us grow.  When we are complacent and “ladi da” we maintain the status quo.  When we are challenged and face difficulties, the real work of dharma begins.  I bow down to hurt.  Emaho!”  Barry Kerzin

W15 HEALING JOURNAL MAY JUNE 006Breathe in the pain and fear.
Send out sunflowers, a loving mate, summer berries,
good food, comedies and murder mysteries.  Healing is sent to all those who are suffering.  Compassionate abiding.

4th of July: The best part was the morning

W15 7 4 USk PSU Market 001We went to the PSU Farmer’s Market on the 4th of July, arriving when it opened as we wanted to avoid heat and crowds. It was lovely, cool under the canopy of trees and on the cool lawn.   We bought our fill of peaches, berries, squash and lettuce, and an amazing product (below) that we used on a pork roast that very night with garlic salt, black pepper and fresh raspberries placed on the pork as it was being taken out of the oven.  Heavenly.

It was the best part of the holiday, because frankly the fear of fire right now is high in the west and fireworks were not appreciated.  We stayed overnight in the studio to make sure that people using illegal fireworks did not inadvertently set our studio on fire.
The security guard at Grimm waved!

Challenges Saved My Sanity

W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 015During this medical debacle, challenges saved my sanity.  When you just can’t think of anything to draw and
you are stuck looking at the same things day in and out, challenges can prompt giving you a drawing to do
without having to decide anything.

Also, while I usually an not a lover of prompts,
I enjoyed seeing what others did with the same prompt —
that was fun, and inventiveness was everywhere!

I never tried Roz Stendahl’s suggestion to freeze your
tele screen and draw whatever is on it.  Good idea.

My stent (no pun intended) on my back is over,
and I am writing and on to other painting projects,
but wanted to finish up the month.

I didn’t just do the challenge from Every Day in June (Facebook challenge page, you are welcome to join — and they have one coming up, Every Day in July).

Gates from around the world, totally made up, quick sketch, above.

W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 011 W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 012Two views of a prompt.  I did try the prompts, but also,
I played with layout, seeing how to integrate my words into my drawings.
I also played with iridescent paints, which I rarely use.

W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 016 W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 026When depressed I doodle palm trees.  Home.  Waves.
I was supposed to do the latter in the style of Van Gogh.
I started that way by the architect in me took over . . .

W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 030Jai Jai Jai kept me company and amused me when we were not fighting for space.  He was named for Govinda Jai, and he lives up to his name always begging for creamy items.

Announcing the Cherished Blogfest

I will be part of the Cherished Blogfest (a long weekend) in July. Anyone else want to do this with me? You can read all about it by going over to the very wonderful Dan Antion’s “NoFacilities” blog.  Link your post to the blog hop here!

Dan Antion's avatarNo Facilities

I know. I’ve been talking all week about how I stink at organized blog activities, but I’m one of the organizers of a Blogfest? WTH? That’s like putting me in charge of the checkbook, or asking me to guard the bacon, or to take fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies to a bake sale.

You might not think this makes any sense, but it does.

A blogfest is a great way to meet new people, see what they have to say and get your stuff in front of them. I’ve never been part of a blogfest, but, as I understand it, it’s pretty easy:

All you have to do is to write a blog post. Post it at the designated time. Fill out a Linky thing, read a few posts, and give us your first-born child.

Oh?

Apparently, we dropped that last requirement?

For the Cherished Blogfest, we – Paul…

Jinhao: Inexpensive Pens

jinhao pensI wanted to like them, I really did.
They are inexpensive, they are Japanese.
I thought they might be like the Platinum Preppie pens,
which are inexpensive, hold a good deal of ink,
and will go for MILES without clogging or being fussy.

I have to say that I can’t say anything good about them.
I bought several through eBay, from two different sources.
NOT ONE will write for a day without seriously clogging.
I’ve tried De Artramentis Document ink, Super5 ink, and finally Noodlers ink.

CLOG CLOG CLOG.
Into the trash they go.

More Preppies on the way.
I can fill them with fun inks, and I have one pen I just picked up after maybe two months of no use.  Heart of Darkness black ink flowed across the page . . .

Publishing the Darker Artwork

This post is a dialogue with other artists, and two other bloggers.  Many people do not think of art as a dialogue and commentary.  I hope they will not mind me co-opting a few lines from their blogs; I encourage you to read and follow both of these blogs!

W15 MAY HEALING JOURNAL 008 TEMP

One of the reasons that what Tanya Lee Markul and Gwenn Seemel posted (below) is so important, is that I have been creating angry sad artwork while in bed recouping from traumatic medical care.  I really had to create without thinking about people seeing it, so I told myself I would only share it with a few close friends — it is so personal.

My blog to date has been about my explorations of watercolor techniques mostly because I started this blog at a time when I was switching from acrylic to watercolor, so many of you don’t know the range of artwork I’ve created, much of which is soul-searching, political, and emotional.

I look to the Universe for messages, a mystical habit that has grown out of my spiritual path.  This week there have been many, and neither blog is easy to repost, so I am giving you samples and sending you to them.

In chronological order, the two that stand out in my mind giving me biggest kick to go ahead and let out  the whole emotional artwork:

4 Creative Traits Most Will Never Understand.
by Tanya Lee Markul

An edited part (a good quote removed) of what spoke deeply to me right now:

sun3. You’ve experienced trauma — and have grown from it. Or are sincerely trying. Most creative people have been through something traumatic to varying degrees. These experiences bring new breath, perspectives and a fuel for their life’s work. They’re often uninhibited, in some way, to allow their painful experiences to be felt clearly and consciously so that they can transform pain and hurt into expressions of art.

Most people who know of the intimate pain and suffering that a creative person has gone through are often surprised at their strength, perseverance and courage to overcome and to choose an expression of art versus a completely self-destructive path.

4. A creative person has proof in the work, not just their words. In other words, you walk your talk. A lot of creative expression gets overlooked or swept under the rug in today’s society. The importance of it is underrated and is often looked at with an over-skeptical, judgmental eye.”

The legacy of Mayor Charlie Hales
by Gwenn Seemel

For years now, I’ve been living in the middle of a bunch of bad decisions made by local authorities. My building has been surrounded by at least five active construction sites since 2013 and the activity is slated to continue at this same frenzied pitch for years to come. This is already difficult, but, when you factor in that the same people whose poor planning skills allowed this to happen in the first place are also failing to enforce construction laws, you have a very dangerous situation. So, like any artist would, I decided I’d better paint about it.

Mayor Charlie Hales' dirty Hands

Click to go on to read, see the entire painting, and see the video of Gwenn discussing
what her process was in this amazing piece of artwork.

When I am through with my exploration of what the medical community did (I am still experiencing some of the aftereffects) and my experience, I will publish it.  I thank many people for encouragement including my husband, and am doing it here because when I publish it I will simply tell my truth.  It is being written now.

PS: Hah!  Here is synchronicity at its best:  Hare In The Moon Astology published this today.  I feel it (my bolded parts, and it is edited):

” There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be” John Lennon.

This year’s Summer/Winter Solstice crackles until Wednesday when Mars enters Cancer to join the Sun.   (removed her planetary influences)

With the Sun on the Aries Point aligned with the Nodes of Fate, this is a tipping point, a collective and personal choice point. Expect big news on the world stage and expect to be affected by it. Waves of heart centered expansive energy from an exact Jupiter /Uranus trine will make everything feel more urgent, more dramatic and more high stakes. Uranus the Awakener is shattering your Saturnian limitations by piercing your unconscious with radical insights as Jupiter the Hierophant opens you to the very real possibility of liberating your soul purpose from the Lord of Time and Karma’s bony clutches.  As Dane Rudhyar says so beautifully : “The Jupiterian urge opens the gates so that caravans loaded with gifts from the farther lands may enter”.

As you stand at this crossroads, claim it as the gate of liberation and emancipation from three years of Saturn in Scorpio losses and defeats.  Start by enquiring :
What in me is dying?
What in me is blossoming?
Then listen for messages on the wind from Hecate, dark Goddess of the Crossroads.

What I Did on My Painful Stent-cation

2015 6 16 ALL The Colors 004I am a watercolor hog!

I admit, I covet every single Daniel Smith Primatek color, and can’t stop buying greens!
I am however, trying to understand the chemistry of paints now and looking at
how close various colors are — I don’t want to duplicate paints.

I have this theory about paint charts and new paints.

When you take the time to integrate new colors and order your paint palette,
new paint colors will show up to screw with your finished chart!

Because I was recouping from the doctor from hell
(and kidney stone surgery mishaps)
I decided to thoroughly clean my paintbox.
I like my tools clean, and there were a lot of overloaded
drippy paints colors on most of the white holders.
A general multicolored ooze was slippery on the bottom of the tin.
I also put them into their lovely rainbow order — or close for a first pass.

I created my chart, below.

2015 6 16 ALL The Colors 001I used up a tube of Chinese white that had a split in it mixing a few pastels I might use
on the bottom row — I am not a pastel gurl but we do have painted ladies in Portland!
I was feeling quite content with myself, all organized!

The day I finished I was gifted with a care package from Cathy Johnson that included
six Yarka watercolor cakes — you can see the colors across the top, below!

2015 6 16 Cathy Johnson Gift 002My theory holds water, I tell you!  I’m not complaining —
I’ve wanted to try Yarka and the red-oranges are lovely and the sepia is GRAND!
I am not happy with my old Blick sepia, a color I use a lot!  The Yarka’s wet so nicely.

Cathy also sent me a teeny travel case (below) and I will now use it for the more opaque colors I want to travel with, and use my daily travel pan for the transparents.
Gads I have to figure out what my travel palette will be now that I have six more
colors to take!  I guarantee the Yarka Sepia is making the cut!

Also, the lovely Hotei Buddha is going onto my happy altar!

That may be the nicest gift of all . . .

June Challenge, Week Two

W15 6 JUNE CHALLENGE 010I am in the home stretch of this frigging stupid stent and frankly,
what has helped keep me sane is these crazy challenges on Facebook.   I am heavily drugged on pain killers and frankly, that does not make me creative.   Having a challenge prompt is something I can just DO — without thinking — and so I challenged myself a bit to make it interesting and am playing with layouts as well.  The prompt for the above sketch was “leave it alone” — and so, three versions of an image of me taking pictures, and I did them quickly and then did not touch it to “fix” them — hence, “leave it alone!”

W15 6 JUNE CHALLENGE 015I was to do a wash, something blue, and a sacred object — and combined them in the painting sketch above.  The wash is the sky and the earth.  I actually LIKE this one!

W15 6 JUNE CHALLENGE 016Next to it I placed a “collection” of hearts — these were fun to paint!
Again, I liked the overall effect on the page (bottom).

W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 003Challenges love to ask people do draw shoes.  Not sure why. . .  but this is also a political statement.  I love Uggs, and have lived in them in winter for years.  My first pair lasted several years (worn daily) and then became my inside studio paint splattered shoes.  My second pair also lasted years, same story.  Now they are made in Chin a and are CRAP.   The begin to unravel within a year or two, tops, and I am sure they are also made with cheap child labor and all that , so, this winter I have to find another shoe *SOB*

W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 006Staying LITERALLY in “bed” with my feet up has been a bi-atch.  Jai has kept me company and gone back and forth from office to home, partly because at his age we don’t leave him alone in the studio anymore.  Yes, our night-lite is a Bubble light from the Christmas tree!

W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 008A sketching friend is doing this month’s challenge in a loose contour sketch —
and so I also have done pages like this for fun.
This page is all about Sammy’s toys and his attachment to his daddy!

W15 JUNE CHALLENGE 014Dinner.  I have done little cooking throughout this time and both of us miss my cooking.  Mitchell is a good cook but has little time, and so pizza pizza pizza has been out fallback.  This night I marinated a ginger-lime-teriyaki (from Ginger People) with chopped garlic (yes from a bottle, Christopher Ranch’s organic garlic) and Sugar Chili pesto.
Slow roast, yummo.

The page layouts, above.

Drawn in a Pentalic Field Book (using it up, not that fond of them)
with Pentalic HB woodless pencil, LYRA watercolor graphite pencil,
various pens and with De Artramentis Document ink, Super5, Noodlers ink

My Loverman

W15 6 7 HEALING JOURNAL 2In all this waiting-for-kidney-stone maladies to heal (the surgeon tore my ureter)
I have been creating a healing journal.  I’m not sure I can share it in its entirety,
but will at some point share within my comfort zone.  It is a personal journal.

Today I entered a piece about my wonderful husband.
He has taken such good care of me in all this — and not for a week or two but for months!  I’ve had to have my feet UP because the way I am proportioned the stents cause me pain when they move, blood, clots, et all.  He has not only done all the work in our business,
but all the cooking (or much of it as I have prepped a few things), cleaning, and shared chores in our lives.  He has also taken care of me — making sure I had interesting treats
(I am bored beyond belief at this point), a clean bed and a clean space in our studio
(I still went into work with him — he did not want me home alone.)

Taking care of someone selflessly is an act of loving compassion,
especially when done cheerfully.
It is the ultimate act, and while no one wants to have to do it
(it means our loved ones need our help), he shows me daily how much
he loves me by being present and kind and thoughtful.
I don’t know if he knows what an amazing man he is, and what a gift he is for me.

Noodlers ink and Daniel Smith watercolors.

June Challenge, First Week

W15 6 JUNE CHALLENGE 003W15 6 JUNE CHALLENGE 004I’m participating in another
keeping-me-sane while recouping challenge!
This months prompts are really good,
and I am working small and fast.
Selfie started it,
and this is one from an image
we use in the business.  Shell game was next.

I meant to do just music and
sketch a couple of Mitchell’s instruments,
but the entire page filled with
all the prompts for three days.
I also played with iridescent watercolors,
which I NEVER use, below.
I like using a metallic pen better —
the silver or gold watercolors float oddly on top.

And Booby Gurl made a small appearance!

I created a page of 2-minutes sketches no pencil with splashes of color for “be seated”, “clean sweep”, and “dance”.  We have many wonderful Monterey and Monterey-style chairs that are fun to draw and splash around with color.
The dancing woman is on the back of the fake-Monterey painted chair (bottom left below) around our work table.

Mitchell is the only person who uses a whisk broom.

with Pentalic HB woodless pencil, LYRA watercolor graphite pencil,
various pens and with De Artramentis Document ink, Super5, Noodlers ink
and Daniel Smith, QoR, and Holbein watercolors.

May Challenge, Wrapping up

W15 18-29 MAY SKETCHBOOK 005Let’s start with an image I like. This was not from the EDM prompts
(which continued to be pretty boring) but from a friend’s prompts for herself this month — a vegetable in season, and these are special because they are gone so fast.  Garlic greens.  We grill or broil them with a bit of garlic salt and pepper.  Yummo.

W15 18-29 MAY SKETCHBOOK 008This was a nice memory, of starting my own architectural firm in Malibu,
sharing space with several other architects, and we wanted to participate in Kiwanis.
I’m a good cook, but never made chili before — and I made a great chili, which went fast.
I was disqualified because I used store-bought sausage, and we drank lots of tequila
in the hot sun and danced in out bikinis and made it on national news!
I never saw it but my mom called me about it.

Now there are a bunch of completely silly sketches, done while on pain killers (that’s my excuse) and the only good thing I can say is that it kept me from total boredom!.

W15 18-29 MAY SKETCHBOOK 009We’ll end with another decent watercolor, of the Doe Library doors in Berkeley California..

May After Surgery: Recouping, In Pain, and Bored

I guess it is good to be able to say I am bored.
Drawing this EDM challenge has not helped all that much because it is a bit like a
coloring book, not what I am interested in.  On the other hand, I have no creative juice
left in my body right now so this is fine.  Like a big doodle.

W15 12-17 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001I had to draw steps.  I choose the 12 steps.
More interesting than a few steps in our building!

W15 12-17 MAY SKETCHBOOK 003 W15 12-17 MAY SKETCHBOOK 004Then what I last bought and what I use everyday.  Art supplies, what else?
(Oh yes, until I heal from the surgery I am using Percoset, thank you pain killer goddess.)
I am majorly in love with Daniel Smith’s Mayan Orange.  Yum.
And after all is said and done, forget most pricey pens.  I love the cheap preppy pens and fill them with my favorite inks and they never clog unless majorly abused.

W15 12-17 MAY SKETCHBOOK 006Things we throw, or would throw out or?
Here amusement hit the pages, because the cats have kept me amused.
When M brought some early watermelon I drove Sammy crazy throwing seeds over his head while he slept.  He hears them but doesn’t see them bounce around.  And his favorite Duck (named after the Oregon Ducks) Mouse is always brought to play.
Kamala has this very weird blue feathered mouse whose eyes lite up and she makes a beeping noise.  Kamala LOVES her, and this amuses me too.

W15 12-17 MAY SKETCHBOOK 008I actually did some cooking.  Kept me sane and interested in life!
There is only so many old movies I can watch and reading on drugs is a losing affair.
Marinated ginger-garlic-chili teriyaki turkey over rice and BBQ anything.

Finally, bored bored bored by the prompts.  Phoning it in.
A doodle at best, and I’ve done better doodles.
