~~~GUIDELINES~~~
  1. The blogfest takes place the last Friday of each month.
  2. It is suggested that you keep your post to around 500 words so many can be visited.
  3. You can link to a human news story, one that shows love, humanity, and brotherhood. Something like this news, about a man who only fosters terminally ill children.  Or tell/sketch one of your own!
  4. Share news that warms the cockles of your heart. No story is too big or small!  Think of stories that show compassion, neighborliness, caring, sweetness — into the core of humanity.
  5. watw-turquoise-badge-320-x280-whitePlace the WE ARE THE WORLD Badge on your sidebar (more sizes below).
  6. Help us spread the word on social media: Tweets, Facebook shares, G+ shares using the #WATWB hashtag through the month are welcome. More Blogfest signups mean more friends, love and light for all of us.
  7. We’ll read and comment on each others’ posts, get to know each other better, and hopefully, make or renew some friendships with everyone who signs on as participants in the coming months.
Sign up in the WE ARE THE WORLD Linky List below
if you want to join us and be visited on the 31st when you post your article!
#OneWeek100People2017
w17-3-5-faces-mrp-03-sqThat’s a winner…  Mitchell!
Okay I thought I’d do the 100-faces-in-a-week.  I’m not terrible with faces,
I just am not too interested in drawing them.  So here is one day of that, and no more.
Can’t do challenges just because you “should”!
w17-3-5-faces-mrp-02w17-3-5-faces-westwing-02WestWing: I was already losing interest in drawing faces… President Bartlett is not bad.
The rest are not well-drawn mugs for the names!
Shoulda Quit While Ahead
w17-3-3-sammy-01It was on its way to be a good sketch and I should have STOPPED but I added water to the charcoal then red and this is what overworked looks like… Sorry Sammy!
I’m gonna say my lack of judgement is that I am sick!
Lino 101: First Day Out
I am taking Tracey Fletcher King’s Lino Printing 101.
Today was my first day to play —
I watched the videos through my fuzzy-headed cold/flu thang,
and finally gave the carving a go in bed over a tray!
Mitchell puts up with my messes… and I try to be a little sorta clean!  (NOT.)
w17-3-4-lino1-first-cuts-11My first one was trying to clean a block I started over 20 years ago, a feather.
The linoleum was brittle.  I tried the stupid putty colored Speedball rubber easy-carve
and that was worse.  Crumbled at every turn!  I HATE that stuff!
Excited and discouraged (odd as that is), I pulled out the 20-year-old silver pad
and stamped it!  Didn’t turn out as bad as I thought.  I went back to work on the
Speedball pink rubbery carving pad, and that was a bit better.  Now I felt like I was the one who was doing a good job or not — instead of brittle lino or crumbling rubber.
When I ended my day I HAD to try printing —
I didn’t try to register it properly, just placed the paper on the inky blocks willy-nilly.
I tried lots of different types of papers…
including some in a tiny book which I will post later (not dry).
Bristol and hand-made papers, some my own and some shellacked.
It was a lot of fun and I have so much to learn.
I want to use handmade papers but there are challenges — texture.
Just right level of ink on the roller, getting the hang of the bamboo brayer
(drove me crazy so I used my hand, which I guess shows!)
I came out with a half dozen good pulls…
 I had a good time while I snuffled my way through the day.
Art therapy!
I’m jonesing for the next print day!
_/\_ Oh Great Lino Goddess King!
Thank you for this class!
See my post about both classes here!
USk: Another Cal-Bag
w17-2-20-usk-calbag-01What can I say… it is outside my office window.
Feeling stuck, I turn to a material I rarely use,
Watercolor charcoal big fat pencil.
If that won’t loosen you up — having no control with a fat dull tip — nothing will.
Sketchbook Project: Fear and Hope, Deportation
I am participating in the Sketchbook Project this year.
This year is that they have assigned topics.
You choose FEAR or HOPE.
Being a creative type I picked one but am not following it.
I am doing Fear AND Hope.
Because of what is happening in our country, because of my nightmares
(real, not metaphorically),  because of the immense grief I am feeling
when I read ANYTHING these days in the political news, I decided to take this on.
If there is anything I know as a journaler of 40 years
(two U-Haul boxes of the written journals I’ve kept)
it is the very best way to get through something is to
write about it, paint it, or
stand on a street corner and tell the story (which in this climate will get you arrested)…
which brings us to one of the reasons I need to write about Fear and Hope.
So I start, and see where this takes me….
Let’s see if I can get to the hope by starting with the fear….
w17-3-2-fear-and-hope-1 w17-3-2-fear-and-hope
Concurrently, I am also one of 20 hosts of a blog challenge
(to be announced in a few days)
which is the antidote to my FEAR writing/painting exercise,
and I hope you all decide to join me once a month in that… drum-roll to come.
A note about Sketchbook Project:  I wanted to join once before and
after paying my money and getting their idea of a sketchbook I returned it.
For the price I think they should give you the option of lined and unlined books
(it is called the SKETCHBOOK Project not the JOURNAL Project),
and AT LEAST paper where every dang page doesn’t bleed through.
So that is my disclaimer… BAD paper, and I was willing this time because
it is journaling and I want to be part of a national conversation.
USk: SCBWI Day
w17-2-25-usk-writer-01Somehow I have to sketch every day…
Nothing special, a doodle in front and in the lecture hall.
I felt like I was coming down with something by the end of the day…
so a very half-hearted attempt to finish!!
This will probably be the first and last time, but my husband is so sweet…
About to become dueling phones…
USk: H&R Block, yup, Taxtime is Near….
w17-2-15-usk-hrblock-01
The new construction in Portland is rather depressing.
Here is the welcoming plaza between two buildings.
Not one plant.  BTW, I added the green and brown…
Could not stand all that grey and I am a fan of the color….
Lapiztola Street Art
509da8bfb901aI’ve always been a fan of street art, graffiti.
I am not talking tagging,
but actual street art.
Lapiztola is one such movement,
and as I am exploring Oaxaca Mexico
for our Virtual Sketchwalk,
I came across these images.
The article in the Guardian
tells a bit about what their art is about —
Drug cartels, including the GMO problems,
and death death death to their children
munchies-lapiztola-24-lowapo_1-15Having a small battle with a flu, but be back soon….
Illustration and Commission
Today I am off to a workshop on illustrating children’s books.  I’ve always been available for commission work but did not know there were groups where I could meet others.
I will be meeting authors and agents and find out what they look for in an artist.
 I did a preliminary page on the types of commission work I can see me doing,
posted here, but will, from time to time, announce various ideas.
To help you tell your story….
Or put a cover on your book!
VSW: Max’s Car, 2
w17-2-21-vsw-max-car-0523
NOW I’m getting somewhere!  From Max Vanderwyst’s car images!
Again I used grisaille to shadow, the Super5 Frankfurt ink in a water-brush.
I should go back and add a bit of shadow to the columns…
w17-2-24-vsw-max-car-0533Very fast watercolor, middle of the night…
Cars are a lot like buildings, you get their geometric shapes and they become easier…
The spread!
Moleskin A4 Watercolor Journal, Pentalic HB woodless pencil,
Pentel Aquash Water Brush with Super5 Frankfurt ink (Amazon when they have it or buy from Europe) for grisaille, Pilot Parallel pen with De Atramentis Document Black ink,
Platinum Carbon Pen with Platinum Carbon ink waterproof cartridges,
White Uniball Signo, Holbein, DS Primatek watercolors, and Daniel Smith Watercolors.
VSW: Max’s Car, 1
w17-2-23-vsw-max-car-bldg-0528
Max Vanderwyst offered his lovely car images and I still went first for the building image.
What can I say? Old habits die hard.  But I’d like to do some cars, so….
w17-2-20-vsw-max-car-bldg-0517
It was a lovely building to draw, and the car classed it up!
I used grisaille to shadow, but I used the Super5 Frankfurt ink in a water-brush, and didn’t get the brush loaded enough for the large areas so they are a bit smudgy.
It didn’t make a difference when I splashed on color later,
but it is something to remember — load even your water-brush with
enough wet wash in that screwy plastic holder.
Moleskin A4 Watercolor Journal, Pentalic HB woodless pencil,
Pentel Aquash Water Brush with Super5 Frankfurt ink (Amazon when they have it or buy from Europe) for grisaille, Pilot Parallel pen with De Atramentis Document Black ink,
Castle Pond at Laguna
w17-2-16-nost-laguna-castle-0504
Missing home, simpler times.  Middle of the night.
I was thinking about the time I ditched school and me and my boyfriend
swam or walked from Main Beach in Laguna to my house in South Laguna.
Laguna kids always had their bikinis under their clothes!
This is an iconic view of the Castle with the pool in Laguna,
Owned by many famous people, one being Bette Midler.
The big black drip of ink costs extra.
As does the blob of pink which came off Baaaad Pat!
Baaaad Drawing of Pat
w17-2-15-nost-pat-baaaaad-0508
Maybe I should stay away from portraits altogether.
For one thing, they HAVE to look like the person or they are just crap!
So personal!  However, I post them all, good bad or the worst.
I reworked this bad sketch until the only thing left to do was to cover the page in black ink.
Dentist
w17-2-17-nost-abstract-0509
Mitchell says this abstract looks  a bit bloody.
That is what you get when you are in high anxiety over the dentist.
BTW, this is not a phobia, but fear from past experiences in the hands of butchers.
w17-2-17-nost-dentist-0513
However, I was pleased after it was over.  She was good!  No pain!
Higher than a kite from drugs to get me INTO THE CHAIR,
the trip home was surreal, from picking up bad food to go at Fish Sauce
(so sad, they used to be good)
to the drive to the studio through NW Portland,
which Mitchell now calls little Shanghai due to the construction sites
blocking roads every day, because they can’t build a three story building
without needing the whole street to stand in,
AND then there were TWO (what are the odds) big rigs blocking intersections
— one jack-knifed and the other stalled.
Mitchell starting down a street then having to back up and go around
(did I tell you the contractors and truck drivers do not put up cones?)
Me laughing my arse off.
Got my daily sketch in before I fell sleep.  Drugs will do that.
