Sunflower

Sometimes I just want to leave the ink drawings as they are.
Sexy Lines.  Thank you Tracey… still missing you today.

Wisteria Streets

I see wisterias in Portland sometimes, but not like I used to see them
in Southern California — streets lined with them all over the older parts
of Los Angeles and San Fernando, so old they created
purple and green tunnels when they were in bloom.
Sketch from my imagination, missing some things about So Cal, home.

Death of a Friend and Teacher

Postcards and some of her images around my messy messy studio desk.

I spent the morning grieving the loss of Tracey Fletcher King from this world.

I would not be the artist I am without her generosity toward
this newbie watercolorist,
as she encouraged me to be me and not try to be a masterful artist of some other variety. She taught me about juicy washes, to go deeper with colors (they lighten), and made me laugh about my own insecurities.  She spoke to be about my sexy lines in an email once, and this still makes me smile.

I especially loved her sketchbook images, though her expertise as a
watercolorist shines in her fine art images like the pieces below.
I continue to be blown away that these are watercolor!

I probably won’t miss her as much as her family and in-person friends in Australia,
who also had the gift of seeing her daily if they wanted to do so.
It is certainly true that I already lost her somewhat when our online chats which we scheduled every couple weeks were lost due to her waning strength.
We talked online as we became close friends — from afar —
about life in AU and being an artist and her cancer and her family and mine.
We told each other secrets, and I wish I had lived in AU so we had met in person.
I want a hug now.
I have been feeling her loss all along, and was in the process of writing her
and sending images today when I heard the news.
Somehow the world seems less friendly and wonderful without her.

Enjoy some videos here.

Words are inadequate.
I will go paint instead.

For her family, huggs, Kate.

Sketchpack Project: Week 3, 2021

In years past I’ve created pretty sketch books during the Sketchpack Project,
But this year I wanted to push myself to work on something difficult for me.
(To see other years you go here!)
To see Week 1 and how I am progressing, go here.
To see Week 2 and more progressions, go here.

Reminder: The idea was to use brushes only, watercolor or inks, no linework!
Taking away my beloved lines, my life raft!  I wanted to see what I’d learn…

This week I saw a LOT of progression, even in simple images,
but especially in Buddha, Yaman’s toy (Feathermouse), and the shell.

Onto the final week!

ABOUT SKETCHPACK PROJECT: The project began in 2011 to get folks to draw daily.
The sketchpack is a small zigzag journal with two usable sides, allowing one to sketch on both sides of 15 ‘pages’ to complete the month of August. There was much enthusiasm and the project is now repeated yearly in August, with a Facebook page for us to share as we go along.
(The page is closed for viewing but you can join to play along!)
There is an Exhibition held in October at the Artsauce Studio in
Observatory,
Cape Town, South Africa of mostly local Sketchpacks!

Frank

I had two images from which to refer while sketching this softly grey-brown long-hair cat.
(See one below, along with my first sketch of Frank done in 2014 — I’ve learned a LOT!)
Frank’s eyes came out  bit too blue, and he is too dark, but I’m happy with his expression!

Pen and ink sketch, building the soft grey,
and then two colors grey and brown and then black ink.

Practicing cats!

30 Posies: Cynthia’s Sedum, Redo

I gave this image another go — see below for the first rough sketches in a Hahnemühle Nostalgie Sketchbook.

Cynthia shares her gorgeous garden  images all the time, and lets me sketch from her flowers.

This image unstuck me, and led to me wanting to sketch many floral images in an odd square watercolor book (for me) from Hand-Book.

Flowers always lift me to sketch!
Thank you thank you thank you Cynthia!

Dieting…. Argh!

I hate how easily my body puts on weight, and how slowly it takes it off,
slower than slow, slower than anyone I know!
Two weeks in bed and I put on about 10 lbs, which will take me a year to remove.

ARGH!

Did these sketches while in bed…

I also ate foods that kick in my arthritis —
yes I am dumber than a brick — and everyone,
before you go on drugs for arthritis, try testing what foods make you hurt.

So dieting I am, both back to my no-pain mode but also lose weight mode…
and in a couple days after I am sure I am over this thang I will start riding the bike
and using the walker, IF IT IS EVER RETURNED TO US BY THE CRAP COMPANY,
and which will remain nameless as they are crap company.

Very happy I can have coffee with fresh ginger slices and milk and a little sugar.
Yummo.

30 Posies: Yellow Daisies

Maybe these are Black-eyed Susans?
I liked the image of the sunny daisies!

Started with a good line drawing….

Background and first layers…

Final touches.

Okay, the leaves bother me but
here I am dealing with the paper in this Hand-Book Watercolor journal.
It is not the best watercolor paper, though it is thick enough.
You can easily get to a place where the watercolor is globbing on,
for lack of a better way to describe it,
and you can’t lift it off without it leaving this odd trail…
and I felt the same way about the second layer of the background.
I didn’t like working it.
No more Hand-Book Watercolor journals for me!

One of the tools below was from last week….

After the tools I became just a bit more confident.
I tried a good set of washes… meh.
Then I tried my cup, a white cup with flowers, and this I liked, finally, YAYA!
The inside of the cups was easy after that…
Lights were easy, and finally, the colorful scallop… Getting better!

This gives me hope going into week three…

Izzee the Climber

She is incorrigible…

A climber, and as she is an indoor, and mostly in studio cat,
she climbs the metal racks (scares the crap out of us)
and then makes sure we see her.
We’ve put kleenex boxes in all the holes so she can’t pretend she is a flying squirrel,
but still she manages to scale the levels… Here she is at the third level.

Sketchpack Project: Week 1, 2021

In years past I’ve created pretty sketch books during the Sketchpack Project,
But this year I wanted to push myself to work on something difficult for me.
(To see other years you go here!)

I created an accordion booklet from heavy unsized watercolor paper, which I’ve had for a long time and am very uncomfortable using.

The idea was to use brushes only, watercolor or inks, no linework!  Taking away my beloved lines, my life raft!  I wanted to see what I’d learn…

At his point I can tell you I was ready to throw in the towel.
Seriously, not liking this no sketching, no linework at all.
I am used to lines, love lines, love pencil, love ink.

AAAACK!!!!

What was I thinking?
Should I change and either size the paper or do linework?

No.  I persisted, unhappy and willing to see what I would learn.

No better for the duration…
Maybe better next week…

Raccoon

I was feeding the birds and as I tossed seed onto the shed roof of the dock I realized I startled a raccoon.  I am glad I did, as s/he was heading toward Nicolai, which is not a good place for a critter to cross when the drivers are trying to get to work on time.
Seeing critters like this bring me to how far from So Cal I am —
In Santa Monica I sometimes saw coyotes if I was closer to the hills,
and often some of the wild parrots and macaws in the palms,
but never a raccoon. Thieves that climb!

I’m surprised I’ve never seen evidence of them on the shed roof,
as they used to sleep on our roof in So Oregon.
The first time I heard what sounded like gorillas overhead it scared me
until I realized what they were.  Not that they can’t be dangerous —
I had a wee baby decide to take on my boot one day and had to laugh but also,
saw the ferociousness that I’d have to deal with IF it were fully grown.

30 Posies: Dogwood

This started as a World Watercolor Month challenge
but I am finishing a square Handbook Journal which was a gift with posie images.
Not ready to make a review of the paper yet — it is very different than what I am used to.

At any rate, I am going to continue on until I finish 30 Posies…
and so will post the future images under that banner.

I did this sweet drawing of dogwood, and then decided to keep it as a line drawing.
I love line drawings and this one turned out very nice.

Inky Thots: Birmingham Black Olive

Gads I love this ink!

I am a huge fan of grey inks, and have never loved a black ink
(though I’ve loved them for their waterproof qualities when sketching).
This ink is not grey, and is not black…
In person you can see the qualities maybe better than on the screen.

Birmingham Black Olive ink departs from their naming inks after famous places.
This ink is truly the exact color of a delicious Black Olive.
It is a Crisp Formula fountain pen ink, formulated to perform well with
a variety of premium, mid range, and discount papers.
Above, a detail of an ink-painting on Hahnemühle’s new Hemp Sketch paper.
From their Natural line, it is 80 gsm and while not technically suitable
for watery drawings, this ink performed well on the paper.

Remember that others review these inks just for writing;
I am also interested in how they are used for ink-painting!

Properties of Birmingham Black Olive ink :

It is a well behaved ink which dries
relatively quickly.  It does not feather on
Post-its nor any paper I’ve tried it on,
including my Hahnemühle Nostalgie journal,
shown right and below!
On watercolor paper, above, when I scrubbed it, Black Olive ink showed quite a lot water resistance.  In further test sketches in my journals show it to leave an imprint of water resistant ink lines when the waterbrush moves the color.
It has no sheen that I could produce,
and is not a strong shader with my 1.1 stub nib.

Below you can see the Black Olive ink can
be a warm black then a cooler black ink,
and a soft blue pulls out of the dark writing ink
in the paper towel test.

Looking at watercolor comparisons, I offer these colors:

*Above, watercolors, all from Daniel Smith.*

Journal notes and a small drawing in my Hahnemühle Nostalgie journal, my
Black Olive ink is in a Pilot Metropolitan and yet this ink works well even in this fussy pen!
It comes off as a soft black when writing.

Above, the full ink-painting on Hahnemühle’s new Hemp Sketch paper.
Drawn with the Black Olive ink, the lines were touched with water using a Pentel Aquash waterbrush,  except for the black olives, which were painted onto the paper.
This was a 30 minute sketch with water movement…
The lines stay slightly visible but also release ink; which means some water resistance.

Brushed sketch of Yamantaka, our black panther cat, on rough thick watercolor paper.
The two images show the difference light plays on this ink’s color.

MOST water soluble ink companies do not pay attention to lightfast qualities
and Birmingham is no different in this line of inks.
Most artists who use ink are making prints of their work —
But ink-painting is becoming more interesting so maybe it is time!

I like what Birmingham says on their website:
We started Birmingham Pen Co. in 2012 in
the Southside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The region of Pittsburgh where we began once  called “Little Birmingham” due to the area’s prolific manufacturing industry in the early 1900’s. The Birmingham moniker was derived from Birmingham, UK – a manufacturing hub that specialized in, among other things, pen and nib manufacturing with thousands of craftspeople employed in the industry.
We chose the name Birmingham Pen Company  to share this little known piece of history and continue in
the traditions behind the name.”

Birmingham’s bottles are glass, and functional
even in the small sizes.  I like glass bottles;
they feel like they will last longer.

Birmingham also turns their own pens,
which I’ve noticed often sell out as fast as they make them!
*I LOVE my Model-A Demonstrator, Violet Beauregarde!*

This is a small family business run by four people!  The brothers, Nick and Josh;
Dad is the chief pen machinist;  and Mom does one of the coolest things about Birmingham, which is their amazing historic names!

World Watercolor Month: Himalayan Poppy

Fell in love with the paper-thin petals in the soft blue;
I’ve not seen this flower before.
Painted from an image from a friend.

For these watercolor posies I am trying out a new book (to me) from Hand-Book,
one of their watercolor journals.  I was given two of them.
So far I like them, and will review eventually.
