Quiet today, new moon dreaming.
A feast for your mind, architectural drawing.

Woot! I made #18 on the
top sketch blogs for sketchers!
I am not usually interested in awards
but this is comparing me with some people
who I think are pretty fantastic,
and it is without promotion by a school!
It is kinda cool — and I do work at it
because I love teaching and sharing…
Sketch to ink to grisaille to underpainting (for brightness) to final watercolor!.
I spent a lot of time in Pasadena and love the Green Hotel!
Above, pencil sketches and a relaxed layout of the entry and one end of the building
inked with a Platinum Carbon fine fountain pen.
Grisaille with a diluted mix of Lexington Grey in a waterbrush (for ease).
I don’t like to muddy up my paint pans, but I have no trouble mixing washes
in the Eldajon Plastic Palettes that stack — I’ve tried others but these are my favorites.
The bright undercolor gives light to the colors placed on top.
Final watercolors of several greens including Primateks
(Serpentine, Dioxide and Jadeite) with more Primateks in the roof (Minnesota Pipestone) and sky and reflections (Lapis) and street and reflections (Hematite).

Sennelier, Holbein, and DS Primatek watercolors, and Daniel Smith Watercolors.

Two different days, good anti-depression quotes.
The one above is coming out of Einstein’s God by Krista Tippett, a very good book.
I have no idea where the one below came from.
A doll’s dress is in the studio for conservation.
It is not easy to draw a needle. I’d been doodling and decided to put it into the journal.

A complicated little house not far from the Moreton Bay Fig.
Not easy, lotsa mistakes…. Logic (an architectural drawing) is easier.
Not my style anymore… and little fun for me! I release those days!
Relying on seeing leads to charming wonkiness.

He and his brother slept in the converted garage. Roses along the fence, it looked homey.

And down the street, what I think of as a typical So Cal track home.
I am leaving pages blank across from these images for him to write his memories!

Like I said, rooster’s on my mind.
We name some of our cups, and we have two sets of Happy Cups.
Both have roosters on them, not by design but by happenstance,
although maybe roosters = morning = creative time = a pretty happy time for me.
Maybe it is because we bought them at the old Mamma Ro store,
a very happy store for us! They are our celebration cups, our ritual cups, our anti-depression cups! (A lot to lay on a cup, I know.)
This is the second set, our hand-painted Italian rustic happy rooster cup.
Best filled with ginger-brown-sugar-milk-coffee.
That lovely rust is Diamine Ancient Copper ink, both brushed and drawn.
The background is Noodler’s Lexington Grey Ink and KWZ Ink’s Foggy Green.
Used a Pentel brush pen because it is so easy to have inks in bed if they are in a brush pen!
Drawing 10…
And on the opposite page, I played with inks showing Mitchell my favorite non-waterproof inks and how they move on the smooth Nostalgie page. Diamine Ancient Copper,
KWZ Foggy Green, Diamine Regency Blue, De Atramentis Tobacco.
OM by Mitchell. Didn’t count this as a drawing…. Took me as much time as the Rooster!

Pepé Le Pew was a favorite cartoon of mine…
Had to be the first sketch of the New Year in the Virtual Sketchwalk group!
I wanted you to see that I had water-colored his black with a dark sepia
but didn’t like the watercolor next to the Platinum Carbon ink so
I brushed it with De Atramentis in a Pentel waterbrush.
I should have waited until the ink dried. Duh!
(The distortion is that I took one image while holding it down.)

Decided to move him into the second image of hot air balloons on a float.
(I always think of Santa Fe and Napa Valley.)

I haven’t posted items because I had not way to download
the second camera due to puter troubles!

Mitchell took me to see his Moreton Bay Fig in Santa Paula. I understand that.
I have relationships with trees too, and this one is amazing.
It was planted in 1879 — and yes, it is famous — and grows up higher than some I’ve seen, instead of sprawling like the one in Santa Barbara. I had one I used to visit that was a short walk from my apartment, at the Hotel Miramar in Santa Monica.
Behind it is the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot.
The plaque under our wondrous Moreton Bay fig tree reads: “Moreton Bay Fig, July 4, 1879, Eden H. Orne. 1962 Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce Tree and Land Purchase.”
It has been almost 40 year since caring citizens organized to save this historic tree. These concerned Santa Paula residents formed a legal trust and named it The Citizens Memorial Park Trust. They were motivated by the possibility that the site, directly across from the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, might be used for commercial development….
Hard work, organization, dedication and generosity produced a successful campaign, which had collected $7,246.04 by February 19, 1962. One half of “Lot #1, Block #56” was purchased March 5, 1962, and the citizens gave this small plot of land with the wonderful tree to the City of Santa Paula. The remaining $246.04 was used to pay for printing, postage and a share of the taxes. Information available indicates that in 1875 or 1876, a nurseryman brought a supply of these Ficus Macrophylla (Moreton Bay fig) to Ventura County from San Francisco in five-gallon cans. This tree is native to Australia, so there must be another wonderful story about the journey from Australia to America. One particular tree was planted by the Rev. Orne in 1879 to commemorate the birthdate of the late Cecelia Orne Miller, his beloved daughter. The Rev. Orne was an early-day Santa Paula preacher who lived across the street from our Southern Pacific Railroad Depot. Our fabulous tree is still a healthy tree with an indefinite lifespan – thanks to the many people who invested their time, energy, expertise, treasure and enthusiasm to save her. Santa Paula is blessed with so many trees to treasure!

Mitchell’s mom ran the Chili Hut in Santa Paula…
When I sketched the building where it was I put a couple of women in dresses as
they might have been then and used a 50’s style car (made up of course.)
Started in pencil, finished up in ink and decided not to paint!

Going back to my Bright Ideas journal for the 365 drawings a day.
I love my Platinum Carbon pen but really, the ink is so reflective that it
shines in scans and in photos… I don’t like THAT!
That is why the roses look grey, and the writing — a Lamy Joy with 1.1 stub,
using De Atramentis Document Black looks black.
That last comment was a nod to tools, which I usually do on Sunday.
My computer died and I have a new one and so… slowly I am getting things together.

My grief when Jai died was overwhelming.
I did not write much or draw him after —
I have several starts, unfinished.
Maybe I am just ready now to deal with
the onslaught of grief that has been
happening in our lives for months….
I miss her.
Her straddling the toilet to wash her face
is an especially funny Kamala antic.

At the New Year we also had a strange experience with toilet paper.
Every time I sat I thought about Pema Chodron, and her commentary about
staying present and having beginner’s mind with each item —
as in, when I flush, the wonder of the water going down, and what if it didn’t?!
We had no perforation (not serration, as I wrote) on our toilet paper…
You don’t give thanks for that unless you lose it.
It is not the end of the world, and for two rolls I had a several-times-a-day
contemplation on being present for what is so each time I used the toilet.
Everything is food for the pen… Drawing 5!

Business trip to Spokane Washington and my overriding memory will be cold to the bones and good people and good food. WHIRLWIND, long days.
I was so frozen we climbed into our not-very-good bed upon walking in the door and kept our fingers under covers to get warm. Shivering. All that. So not much drawing.
AND WOULDN’T YOU KNOW I TOOK ALL MY SKETCHING GEAR???
Can’t recommend the Hotel Ruby. Teeny room, soft mattress, hard pillows.
Bad breakfast and the worst, NO COFFEE POT IN THE ROOM.
I so wanted to like it as it has bright red walls and original local art…
Tip-in over drawing.
Drawings 3 +4… Not in order of execution.
