May Sketches: Heading Into Surgery

W15 5 6 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001Tough week, as I head into my LAST surgery for kidney stones.
At a client meeting in Washington, I painted a bit with my feet up.
The moon looked full out our window early morning.

W15 5 7 MAY SKETCHBOOK 002W15 5 8 MAY SKETCHBOOK 002We have names for our mugs, and the marigold Fiesta mug falls into the
“happy mug” category.  My sunflower mug.  I cannot imagine why Fiesta kept
the sallow yellow and discontinued this color.  Daft.

W15 5 9 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001I’ve had this old Girasole Organic Zinfandel wine bottle on my art desk
for a long time because I loved the sunny image.

I am a bit down due to this crazy painful kidney stone situation.
I am also a Buddhist tonglen practitioner.
The practice involves breathing in negative, and sending out positive.
When I am doing this for others I often use a visual image of sunflowers when I cannot think of an antidote.  Today, I am breathing in sunflowers and sending them out to all the people who are in pain — some for me, some for them, but yes, I need it today.

W15 9 MAY SKETCHBOOK 002The suggestion was for an ENVELOPE, and that felt so boring.
I figured there had to be furniture named after envelope . . .

W15 10 MAY SKETCHBOOK 004In the middle of this I had a package of new paints and Moleskin Journals arrive from Merriartist — Yay! to new colors!  Amazing Mayan Orange.  Amazing Mayan Yellow.
The Fuchsite has sparkles in it — the ground stone — and so it won’t be my favorite.

W15 10 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001And right away I used it to paint Mitchell’s lamp for something you turn on and off.

W15 11 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001Finally, something you wear on your head — mine is in my hair.
Mmmm. . .  disco dancing sparkling combs, and I hated the disco dancing bars but loved the dress.  Glamorous and flirty and this is a remnant that I am about to sell on etsy!
A beautiful white bugle bead and rhinestone hair comb.

On my way to surgery this very morning.  This keeps me from thinking about it.  See you end of the week or month, depending upon how I feel about sitting at the puter!

W15 5 4 MAY SKETCHBOOK 005Drawn in an Pentalic Field Book (using it up, not that fond of them)
with Pentalic HB woodless pencil, LYRA watercolor graphite pencil,
various pens and with De Artramentis Document ink, Super5, Noodlers ink
and Daniel Smith, QoR, and Holbein watercolors.

Cathy Johnson’s Fantasy Journal

The whole subject of fantasy or fake journals is interesting to me now.
Cathy Johnson filmed this little video of a journal she created during a stressful time:

Tracey Fletcher King On Frisking

I love Tracey’s blog — for the laughs and good tips — and her art!  I wish I could easily just reblog but I can’t, so I am giving you a bit of her blog and you really must GO read it and REALLY must subscribe.  Mitchell, too, never misses it because of her humor!

Frisking Tips…

Last week I had planned on writing a post on liquid frisket, or masking fluid
but was a bit distracted by other things, so here it is this week
I decided to talk about it as I had a few people comment and email after the carrot demo  video that they had various hassles with it etc… and I have to say I do have a love  hate relationship with the stuff

For doing things like this perfume bottle which was suggested by the lovely Twinkletoes  Allan, I love the stuff… especially since I found this Fine Line brand that has a lovely fine tip and  allows me to do swirly lines like this, and as I let the paint drip and move then it is essential  for preserving areas of white while still allowing me the freedom to splodge on colour with abandon

For more, continue to Frisking Tips…  and tell her I sent you!

May Sketches, Cinco de Mayo

W15 5 1 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001 copyMy month of fake journaling has come to an end, and sadly (in terms of sharing) my next projects is top secret.  Someday I’ll post it, but not for a LONG time.  I am participating in a month long challenge called Everyday in May (EDM), though this year the suggestions have been uninspiring so I may not keep up.  Challenges have to be fun and interesting!

W15 5 1 MAY SKETCHBOOK 004 copyHowever, an Italian artist is also doing a challenge too, and we can play along with her — and I am making EDM more interesting by doing hers too.  She suggested an event in May, and that is how the Eames Chair came about, above.  Mitchell and I met and married in May, and May is very very special, proof that your world can change in an instant.

W15 5 2 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001 HURLBUTFrom my hometown, Mary Hurlbut took this image in her backyard
macadamia nut tree, and was kind enough to let me use it for a sketch.

W15 5 4 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001Herbs and curtains were on order.  (Curtains, really?  Boring.)  We have NO curtains,
hate ’em unless they are those kitschy 50’s kitchen curtains, but we do have tassels!

W15 5 5 MAY SKETCHBOOK 001Something hot.  Okay, that is my husband.  And I am stinking lousy at portraits.

W15 5 5 MAY SKETCHBOOK 002Last but not least, something with a shell.  I have one of those silly pencils with
many colors lead and decided to play with it on this one.

Drawn in an Pentalic Field Book (using it up, not that fond of them)
with Pentalic HB woodless pencil, LYRA watercolor graphite pencil,
various pens and with De Artramentis Document ink, Super5, Noodlers ink
and Daniel Smith, QoR, and Holbein watercolors.

May Day, A Look Back

REFLECTIONS
AS I CREATED THE JOURNAL AND AFTER

I was in the middle of the  A-to-Z challenge last year when I stumbled upon the International Fake Journal Month, and “met” Roz Stendahl.  I wished I had seen it before the A-to-Z — it sang to me.  I am happy to say after doing it I want to do more, and not wait until next April — in other words, I think I have found a “thang” I want to do, to make into my own, and to transform into a creative medium for myself.  For that, I think Roz.

I am in the middle of massive numbers of kidney stones in both kidneys, and so my work schedule in our business has been a bit different.  I do what I can.   Being in pain and sleeping on and off due to staying up all night sometimes was a boon in this instance.  I could not sit at the computer, but I was able to sketch in bed or on our studio sofa.

I chose this trip because it is a trip that Mitchell and I wish we could take.  We are writing a book, and some of it is set in this part of the world.  I changed the nature of our alter egos a bit from reality.  With mine, I was an architect and left that profession at 30 for the world of art and writing.  With Mitchell, if the man had known he wanted to be a historian I think he would have — or an architect.  So I let that be who we were, architect and history professor — instead of furniture conservators.

My goal when I started was to loosen up and get into a groove, integrating my years of architectural drawing back into my art.  I had to nearly walk away from my attention to exacting detail, but now I wanted to bring it back in, but differently.  To keep up with time constraints I had to stop thinking so much.  This daily drawing of architecture (place) was very good for that.

And I had not thought about architecture much in many years, mostly because Oregon has little good architecture, and what they have they want to tear down.  Michael Graves died during this “trip” and I grieved the man I was exposed to and learned from and admired, and also realized that the incredibly daft town I live in wants to tear down the first post-modern highrise built, out city building.  They changed it, then blamed him for the changes to his design THEY MADE, and now they want to tear it down and build some other uglier building.  Trust me, I see what passes for public buildings here and 99% of it is horrid.  They don’t see the art in architecture, they don’t understand cutting edge, they don’t understand the dialogue of space.  I learned to look the other way after a year of living in Oregon.

Finally, I didn’t count on how I am sorry I can’t share this part of me with family (other than Mitchell) as they don’t get it.  If I had been on a real trip then my close circle would have read every post or email, but this is something they just won’t understand!  So last night when Mitchell and I were watching a Rizzoli & Isles whereby parents and close friends didn’t know the murdered girl well, and had no idea the creative things she was into, I totally identified.  Not with the murdered part.  With people knowing only parts of you.  For me, this is not because I won’t share.  I think it is due to limited interest or not understanding.  I don’t take it personally, just know that my life is very compartmentalized.

W15 4 1 IFJM 003My notes during the month as myself about the process!  NO fakery!

1 April
In pain from kidney stone and couldn’t sleep even with drugs.  I worked my insomnia into my journal!  Jai was asleep on my bolster and so I draw him with that exact expression (he was annoyed at me playing with his feet earlier) as if he were on our suitcase.  Drew all night.
I am shellacking today, just one table, so going up and down to the finish room and will be able to journal more today.  Will take advantage while I have it.

I think I will simply add to it as I have time and let the time of day dictate what I say.  I may do 1 entry or 6 entries — little ones as I have time.  That is, after all, the way I like to journal — keep it with me and just do it as I have time.

W15 4 2 IFJM 006 BANNER2 April
Also had trouble getting to sleep due to pain but took a whole percoset so finally drifted off.  Wrote while I waited.
Several things about yesterday.  I filled up FIVE pages, and panicked.  Mitchell has been looking over my shoulder while I researched Italy and made many suggestions last month.  I have files on images and places.  I CAN SEE THAT THIS WON’T MAKE IT ALL INTO THE JOURNAL.  No time and limited pages.  I want it all to fit into this journal.  So I did a timetable today and allowed 2 pages of layout per day, cut back on locations we’d planned, and now feel better.  I still have a few pages left IF I can’t do it while I am having the lipotripsy.
I also had my Goulet Pen order arrive yesterday and worked it into the shopping in Italy today!  Of course, that store may not REALLY carry my inexpensive pens but I don’t care.  Close enough for me!  And I can use my new green ink in the journal!

W15 4 3 IFJM 011 BANNER3 April
So much stress about the pain from the kidney stones.  Doing this fakery is helping me forget the stones — not the pain, but it allows me to let go of the nerve-wracking worry of the procedure down the road.
I also realize I am doing things comfortably.  I need to break away and do what is uncomfortable.

W15 4 4 IFJM 0094 April
I finally created an image I love.  It has the looseness and yet has enough detail.

W15 4 7 IFJM 005 BANNER7 April
It is true that Mitchell and I two peas in a pod, connected and loving, and that our creativity together brings that to the fore.  I had not planned on this eking into this journal, but I am not resisting anything.  He is worried about my pain and my surgery, and so this journal is fun for him too, and I’ve included him in where we go and what we see.  I love that we changed our plans together in real life and in the journal, but can’t discuss that — too personal.

W15 4 8 IFJM 006 BANNER8 April
I realize that this is helping me to further reconnect with the architect and the designer I left behind to become an artist.  Maybe I can reconnect these parts to be a better artist.  I use the architect in me daily to solve problems in our conservation business, but I have suppressed her in many ways to loosen up when making art.  Especially doodling the lovely cross in the wall today, I remembered how I love the simply ink-on-paper.

W15 4 11 IFJM 00211 April
I am enjoying drawing this way, creatively, and am also thinking about architects and Urban Sketchers.  The games, the snootiness, the separateness — all things I want no part of, and perhaps it is because so many folks who are running USk are architects.  I know great fun architects, but so so many have sticks up their butts.
I personally find USk to be boring in its rules for me creatively.  I’ve done hundreds of city drawings and want more now.  This fake journal is bringing that home.

W15 4 13 IFJM 002 BANNER13 April
It has taken me this long to loosen up.  Wow.

W15 4 17 IFJM 003 BANNER18 April
I notice that upon going back I like some images that I didn’t like so much and don’t like others that I thought were good.  Judgement is a fickle woman.

W15 4 20 IFJM 006 JAI BANNER20 April
Surgery.  I had a lot of time before the surgery as they scheduled me in the afternoon.  I drew like crazy, and sat and painted too.
That morning I woke to find Jai snuggled so far into my arms as if he knew.  He doesn’t normally try to sleep with me like that — a second skin.  I was afraid of the surgery and I know he knew it.  Our guys are family.
And I AM afraid of the surgery.  I don’t like pain, but I also am aware of the risks of going under.  Doing this journal has helped me to avoid confronting the fear, but now it is her.
I turned Jai cuddling me into an entry about the pension cat.  The stupid thing was I placed it on the opposite page.  Oh well.

W15 4 21 IFJM 007 BANNER23 April
The stories of the Camino were variations of stories I have heard or are about me, turned into fiction.  Two readers realized this from other posts.
Seriously painful days, and so I was lucky to do anything.  Medical doctors LIE, and had I not had Mitchell around I would have been in danger due to the lack of truth they told.  I am taking my healing into my own hands now, and with better sleep maybe I can heal.  Barbarians.

W15 4 25 IFJM 00725 April
I love working in whatever way I feel like working without the silly constraints of a few groups which, in other circumstances, I would like to play in — my creativity needs to be free and open, and this includes most challenges I play in too.  Pencil, pen, watercolor, whatever, in whatever order I want to use them.  I am over college, thank god/dess. I play in it for the camaraderie, and if that is stuffy, then poo on all that too.  I am loving IFJM and its participants.  I am making decisions to move away from some other groups, tho none that Jorge put me into.

W15 4 26 IFJM 00328 April
Looking back I want to blacken in the trees in this image.  I probably will.  My journal, my way.  And finally, a lion I LOVE!

Turns out, not so in my case.  It is why I journal.
I forget details.

And I really need to clean my desk.

IFJM 30: Rome, Our Last Day

April 30

W15 4 30 IFJM 004From my journal:  “Hard to believe it is our last day.  We thought to go to Vatican City, but we saw the lines and decided, another trip. . .  and back to Castel Sant’ Angelo, or the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s Mausoleum we went.”

W15 4 30 IFJM 003 W15 4 30 IFJM 001From my journal:  “We wandered across the Tiber and back into our stomping grounds from our first days.  We had everything packed to ship this AM!  Lunch on Campo Flori, simple red pizza and antipasta, not nearly as good as Antico Forna. . .  then wandered more, though I HAD to pull Mik back to Novelli.  He had not seen it.  He bought me a shiny copper body Lamy pen.  If only someone made a metallic copper ink that was waterproof!”

“We stocked up on more goodies for the night and trip home — then at the last minute went out for our dinner!”

“Memory is more indelible than ink.”

W15 4 30 IFJM 000Because it is our last day, I am posting the inside of the front and back of my journal.   In the front are things which helped me face what I was going through, personally.  I also took notes of foreign phrases as we traveled.  FRONT:

When we started the back was full of notes.  Now only the things that we didn’t do are in there, for another trip.

IFJM 29: Genoa to Rome, A Slow Drive on the Coast

April 29

W15 4 29 IFJM 000From my journal:  “Last day in Genoa, and we wandered into the Mercato Orientale . . . a well-kept tourist secret.  We wandered the stalls, bought more chocolate (we ate what we bought in Nice — oops!), bought spices (yum for us) some of which I’d never heard mentioned.  We can have an adventure at home figuring out what to do with them.  Upstairs found artist’s stalls and supported locals with art cards.

We took our lunch (bread, cheese, lunch meats, berries) and began our day long drive back to Rome. . . like driving 101, it should be beautiful.  We let go of Google map and are following signs.  It’s a gorgeous warm spring day, I’m with my loverman, life is good!”

“Honestly, the only question most ask about a new building at this point is basically, “Is it a soul sucking eyesore of cheap-ass despair?”  It’s not?  Whew.”  Sarah Lowell

W15 4 29 IFJM 003From my journal:  “Stopped for an ice cream in a nameless coastal town.  The drive has been amazing.  Gelato was great and we discovered we were in Puccini’s home town (statue and signs to his villa were the tip-off.)”

W15 4 29 IFJM 004From my journal:  “Having never seen the leaning tower of Pisa, I was surprised at what was AROUND it.  I loved the wonderful ice-cream-cone building in the Piazza (of course, maybe I am obsessed suddenly with ice cream.)  Okay, leaning tower seen.”

“We now MUST BOOGIE.  We want to pack and mail our goodies, and be ready to go home.  That will give us one good day of sight-seeing if everything goes smoothly.  On to Rome, and home May Day!”

IFJM 28: Genoa, the Painted City

April 28

W15 4 28 IFJM 004From my journal:  “Genoa, a key city in the novel.  The colors of the city are like Pompei, bright almost garish painted facades.  So many influences . . .  Arab? Roman?  We haven’t had enough time as we near the end, but I was able to find several key places we researched and soak up the visuals on how the city might have been.

Then there are the Sad Lions.”

IFJM 27: Highway 101 in Italy

April 27

W15 4 27 IFJM 001AFrom my journal: “The yum shop! Breakfast of brioche + yummies + cheese.”

“Another day of pure vacation as we head to Genoa . . . one of our takeaways brings us to remembering Eddie Izzard talking about Europe “where the old stuff is.”  Meandering up the slow road, hugging the coast, reminds me of 101 in California, and our precious Mission system (which we don’t take care of!)  Here, I could spend a week sketching in every tiny town, noteworthy gorgeous ‘in-use’ buildings and spend a year just from Marseille to Genoa!  Menton, one of the last places as we headed out this morning!”

Guys I don’t know if my personal thoughts were clear enough.  We have little ‘old stuff’ in he USA and we don’t care much about it.  Here they have so much ‘old stuff’ google barely knows about it!  I tried to find the name of the church above the blue striped awning I sketched below and could not.  It simply did not show up on any map!

W15 4 27 IFJM 003From my journal: “10am Had a coffee and hung out in front of Chiesa di San Michele in — wait for it — Latte, Italy!”

IFJM 26: Nice! I Fell in Love Again!

April 26

W15 4 26 IFJM 003From my journal: “Everything is so close.  It took no time to get to Nice, and we decided to stay close to the water all the way to Genoa.  I had us stop at the train station, where I landed [years ago] in Nice in the snow.  In April it was cheerier, and crowded.  Old Town church.”

Note the writing here is in order of the day.  I wrote in my journal all wacky because the sketches dictated the order.

W15 4 25 IFJM 007From my journal: “Walked off without a pen — geesh.  We walked up the Boulevard Liberation to visit the museum (Musee des Beaux Arts de Marseille).  It was fun to play tourists, no book agenda.  I was thrilled to see the Muse by Rodin and two Rubens — I love Ruben.”

“We tried an airy, bright restaurant — La Table Cinq — for a fabulous dinner.  An amazing salad, pork and fish.  Split desserts, a lemony tart and a berry ‘cake’.”

IFJM 24: Aigues-Mortes

April 24

W15 4 24 IFJM 002From my journal:  “We stopped by the commune of the Aigues-Mortes (stagnant or dead water) on our way back to Marseille . . .  Our poor French has us wondering if this castle/fort was really built before the birth of Christ.  Part of the canal system (Canal du Rhone a Sete) enters through a wall.  The outside left me cold.  (Does it show in the drawings?)  But on the inside is a bustling lively city with eateries, markets, etc.  We had a light lunch of some sort of sandwich-bread-cheese concoction.”

IFJM 23: Thanks to Isabelle, the Canal du Midi

April 23

W15 4 23 IFJM 001

From my journal:  “A great find, the Canal was built in time for E & M’s travel . . .  We had no idea but for being here, on foot, looking.”

Thanks to Isabelle again.  This will change the book considerably!

“After 1980 you never heard reference to space again.  Surface, the most convincing evidence of the descent into materialism, became the focus of design.  Space disappeared.”  Arthur Erickson

IFJM 22: Toulouse

22 April

“Watercolor is like a pet.
It has its own mind,
and you can only domesticate it to a certain degree.
You’d better find a constructive way of cohabitating.”

Felix Scheinberger
[Urban Watercolor Sketching, via Marion VO]

W15 4 22 IFJM 010From my journal: “Toulouse was part of the Camino or path of Saint James.  Saint Sernin-Basilica is part of the UNESCO Heritage Site.  Two places to cross the river in the 1600s: Point Neuf. built in the 16th Century, and the Bazacle, a ford across the Garonne, built in the 12th Century.”

“They tried to bury us.
They didn’t know we were seeds.”  Mexican Proverb

IFJM 21: Bazeige to Toulouse, and more Camino Walkers

21 April

W15 4 21 IFJM 003“Marker for the way of St. James”

From my journal:  “We took our breakfast to a small country church in Baziege, laid out a blanket, and waited.  Latte, brioche, prosciutto and apples helped us pass the time.

W15 4 21 IFJM 002I spoke to a traveler my age who opened up to me.  She was walking the Camino because her gossip had led to the ostracizing of a woman and that woman had committed suicide.  She had begun the journey in Arles and intended to go all the way to the cliffs.  She said if she could not change how she felt when she arrived she might jump.  This conversation upset us.

I spoke to her about having been the victim of lies and that I, like the woman, had choices.  I moved.”

[Discussing dreams:]
“Around thirteen billion cells in the occipital cortex fire off with every image we experience, whether or not the image reaches consciousness, and whether or not the image is of endogenous or exogenous origin.  The fact that something has caused at least thirteen billion cells to fire off in the brain must be appreciated as wondrous.”  Brugh Joy

“On to Toulouse. . . La Ville Rose . . . The Pink City.  Sketched the Hospital La Grave.”

W15 4 21 IFJM 006From my journal:  “We stayed on the East side of the Garonne in a pensione near the Universite Toulouse.  On our way to dinner I did this sketch [below] of the hospital from Basilique Notre-Dame.  We had a wonderful roast chicken dinner — like my own cooking! Heaven.

Toulouse is a gorgeous city.  The lights and the waterways and the pink brick.

Not knowing French has been a problem.  [Let me explain, because I don’t know Italian either but I can understand more due to living near Mexico.]  The ‘Canal du Midi’ is a great example.  We saw waterways, rivers, etc. [on maps], but had no idea of this spectacular canal.  We could have taken the canal — it would have been a different trip from Montpellier!  Wish I’d known!”

IFJM 20: Meeting Camino Travelers

April 20

Middle of the night, Montpellier, from my journal:  “I woke to find the pensione cat had crawled into our bed and snuggled in like Jai does with me.  So so sweet.  Made me miss home tremendously.  The guys are not pets, they are family, and I am ready for home.  2/3 through our trip, loving it AND ready for Jai kisses.”

“All the world is made of faith, trust, and pixie dust.”
J. M. Barrie

W15 4 20 IFJM 002From my journal: “Found a group of travelers at benches outside a hostel at Eglais Sainte Mare Madelaine in Bezier.  Isabelle’s first tip was a good one.  M and I joined them for coffee.  None of them were technically traveling together. . . though they were loosely doing so now.  Our burning question:  “Why do YOU walk the Camino?’  [We wanted to hear it firsthand.]

“A woman in her 40s does a bit of it each year as a part of her Catholic Spiritual Practice, in Spring, and for no particular reason but penance.

W15 4 20 IFJM 007A 50-ish man was doing it in honor of his dead wife.  He is an atheist, she was Catholic.

A younger woman was one year sober and walking the Camino as her 4th step.  She cried as we talked.  She said she had talked about her regret with her sponsor, but none of her friends wanted to hear it.  She had lost so many friends due to her anger when she drank, and even more when she would not party with people anymore.

Back in the car, M & I talked about this research.  Nothing we can use in these conversation.”  11:30

IFJM 19: Montpellier, Closer to the Camino

April 19

W15 4 19 IFJM 002“The only valuable thing is intuition.”  Einstein

W15 4 19 IFJM 004From my journal, our vision, as this journal is writing/painting us into our new life:
“Our dream is to finish the book together within twelve months.
On Sundays after yoga or a walk or lovemaking we will continue the writing process in coffee shops or tea rooms or around our Monterey table in our studio.
We will be supported financially toward our goal . . .
stealing some evenings and an occasional whole weekend at the ocean,
the year will culminate in 4-8 weeks off in December where we have prepped
to drop in and sprint to the creative finish line.  This will be a joyous experience!
Final edits will occur before this time next year.
We see each other in good health and excellent shape,
feeling joyful enthusiasm for our lives and our work.
This will be the first of many books together.

This or something better for the good of all concerned.
So be it!”

W15 4 19 IFJM 010W15 4 19 IFJM 012From my journal:  “Isabelle drove down to meet us at Broc’ Cafe.  We met her through Dr. Chen, our Chinese doc.  Her acupuncture practice is thriving, and she’s taken up watercolors.  Her paintings are amazing . . . intuitive talent!  She tipped us toward places where the Camino would cross populated areas — or close enough — where we might meet up with travelers.  (Saying that word makes me think of Lord of the Rings or Deep Space w/ Star Trek.)  BTW, enjoying playing with the pencil from the hotel. . . It is softer that what I brought.”
