Small Moments

Sometimes in the midst of extreme sorrow and worry,
there are those moments that open your heart:
glimpses of M’s twinkling eyes or a carefree cat streaking through the studio
or Savitri’s feet.  Her feet slay me.

I didn’t do them justice, but there is that memory in my journal.

I keep a commonplace book, do you?
A book of quotes that move me.

Horses are Coming!

An exciting project,
the restoration of the Jantzen Beach Carousel,
is moving into our studio
*that’s MPF Conservation, our business studio.*
After weeks of posting daily, I am taking a break…
We had the move planned and then our main moving man fractured his ankle.  Things have moved out two weeks
but I am slammed with work and with cold!

We will get the horses corralled in a couple of weeks.
It’s been a busy crazy time…  I need a posting break!
Be back soon!

Still sketching, not posting!

Inktober 31, Last but not Least

I’m finishing a sketchbook from the Sketchpack Project this year…
As it was all about pen and inks, seems a good fit to finish Inktober!

Three pens and ink and we are finished… posted all today!

For my birthday Mitchell bought me the bright red Karas Custom K Fountain pen.
I love this pen, and thought I might pair it with a true red, then a graphite grey,
But this amazing grey that is a purpley grey was discovered and that is the ink for the pen.  Purple Jazz, which should be called Purple Storm Skies.
That is what I will think of when I use it.
And amazing shading ink, this one will be for sketching
where I want to move water into it for effect.

Robert Oster I love you!

*Note, see below to buy the Karas pen from me…
It hurts my hands to use for any length of time….*

Tried the Monza flex because it came with a bottle of Monteverde ink —
Basically a free pen.   I have not played enough with the flex nib to comment.
It doesn’t seem too flexy.
It doesn’t give me flexy-sexy lines, like a stub or architect’s nib.
We’ll see.
I’ve hated flex nibs in past, but only tried Noodler’s and as I hate the Noodler’s line of pens it is no wonder I’ve a bad experience.  I’ll tell you how I like it after I’ve played with it.

Robert Oster’s Fire Engine Red ink (sample) is in it and it is a lovely TRUE RED!
I am sure that I will own this bottle when I need a new red ink!

I started the Sketchpack Project with a Moonman and am ending it with one,
unplanned.  I fitted it with a 1.1 Goulet stub nib,
but that is not because the nibs are not great but because I like stubs!
I bought another of these lovely inexpensive pens and filled it with Robert Oster’s Emerald.  The man has to STOP making new colored inks as they are each better than the last, though this may be one I had simply not seen before.

Another Inktober finished.
This is my favorite challenge,
because I like to draw and paint in inks!

Selling my pen… I know enough about my likes in a pen and so I am making a fast decision.  The stub has to be used in the upright position or it skips, and that position hurts my arthritic hands.  I don’t think there is any other issue like a flow problem — it appears to be a fussy pen for how you hold it.  1.1 steel bock nib.  Mint condition.
Comment and I will email you if you are interested.  I am sending 4 ink samples with it, Priority shipped for $80.  Not recommended for peeps with arthritis!
Know that other nibs can be purchased through JetPens.

Inktober 30, Two Cheap Platinums

I’m finishing a sketchbook from the Sketchpack Project this year…
As it was all about pen and inks, seems a good fit to finish Inktober!

Update from the time I wrote this about it leaking…
I had turned it into an eyedropper and it can’t be done.
So my bad.  I will rinse and fill an ink tube.

LOVE the De Atramentis Document Purple ink.
I’ve wanted this a long time and finally, it is here.
Lovely color, WATERPROOF (yaya!), though it doesn’t paint as easily
as some permanent inks… oh well.

The Preppie is a great workhorse — is it one of the best pens, and that has nothing to do with price.  Writes and writes and writes even if the ink is left in it forever.

I tried the Rohrer & Klingner Sketch inks, and was a little underwhelmed, but the blue (Marlene) is beautiful, bright, and so far, permanent.
I haven’t tested it on many papers but will buy a bottle for when I want a true blue.
I have the Super5 Atlantic for a great permanent “off” blue!

Inktober 29, Squirrel Hill Journal Entry

Do we really want
this war in our country?
do we want the hatred in our country?

I stand with the Constitution,
I stand with the Statue of Liberty.

Inktober 29, TWSBI Pink again!

I guess it is okay that I sketched the shocking pink TWSBI
twice (first one right) — This time I also sketched the J.Herbin Rose
Cyclamen ink bottle.

This was one of my first bottle purchases, bought totally because of loving the flower… Now I buy samples first, a prudent thing to do, but when the pink TWSBI Eco came out it was a perfect way to use the Rose Cyclamen ink.

I’ve been happy with both my TWSBI Ecos —
I don’t like the stupid way they market the colors for a limited time though.
I’ve fallen in love with one I can’t get because they only sell it in Japan (orange)
and I love the turquoise and it was sold when I discovered them.
*POO… I think limited editions on such an inexpensive item suck*

My whole layout, above, waiting for the next installment.

Inktober 28, Fude Pens

FOUR MORE DAYS!

Okay, full disclosure.  I bought one of these pens years ago without knowing anything about pens, had limited success with it, and broke it…. I was sad but oh well.

Now I see so many people enjoying these pens, and getting
GREAT lines out of them I had a two-fer coupon and so bought them both
and damn if I am just not enjoying the pens AGAIN.  ARGH.

I put the Shimmer and Shake Blue Moon sparkly ink from Robert Oster…
And dang it clogged the pen in 15 minutes.  I am cursed.
Others like these sparkly inks but they just clog my pens.

The green Sailor Califolio Oliverstre sample ink is lovely, but I have two great inks
that are also in this range and so, it goes away, no bottle.

So we will see how my practice goes with the green sailor pen…
I will see if I can get the great lines to flow with it!

Inktober 26, Lamy and the Great Pumpkin

I’m finishing a sketchbook from the Sketchpack Project this year…
As it was all about pen and inks, seems a good fit to finish Inktober!
I imaged it with my pencil marks left in — so you can see how much I sketch
with pencil sometimes, especially when the layout is complex.

Inktober 24, Hari aka Fred

We fall in love with the energy of a soul in a photo.

Tiny Fred began his story way up a tree in a neighborhood in Washington State.
Boys playing heard his cries, and brought him to the grandparents.

Nobody in the surrounding neighborhoods claimed him.
A personable cat, Fred made friends with everyone, hanging with dogs and cats and people.
He showed that he could fit in anywhere, that he was family!

The foster family came,
and the boy fell in love with Fred.

Fred woke the boy every morning,
“Wanna Play?”  They went everywhere together, snuggled and scratched
and played until Fred curled
into bed with the boy at night.
They became best friends,
and Fred became a well-adjusted,
gregarious, brave kitten who
thought he as big as a Tiger.

But Fred was destined
for a Forever Home.

At night his picture went
around the world on
the magical Instagram.
Two people missing their beloved grey tabby snuggled into bed at night with their tuxedo cat, panther cat, and siamese gurl, laughing at pictures of Fred.
They fell in love with Fred lounging on the sill at the
beach house on the Washington coast or riding home to
Portland on the boys lap.
They delighted at the snuggly pictures and the loving looks between boy and cat.
They arranged for a pickup.

In a crowded store the boy told Fred’s story, his quirks and gave him a last hug.
He didn’t want to let Fred go.
We gave him the chance to keep Fred,
but it was time.  Tears all around,
Dad and Boy saying goodbye, and us at the huge gift of Fred coming into our lives.
So it began.

These are sketches from when Fred aka Hari aka Terror-Tiger was a foster kitten, lovingly taken care of by a responsible young man who did not want to let him go.  They allowed me to use the images they took of “Fred.”

The stories will continue, of Fred and Savitri and Yamantaka.

I am available for sketched pet portraits.

lovingly taken care of by a responsible young man who did not want to let him go.
They allowed me to use the images they took of “Fred,”
charming images we looked at on Instagram that stole our heart.
I have made a story book, and I will add writing at the end, telling his story.

Many of the photos of “Fred” showed him well-loved, gazing at his beloved buddy.

Each day I will add another sketch:

In this one, because he was an unexpected addition,

He acclimated well to travel, being of a certain calm nature.

Inktober 18, Turning Point Birthday

Mitchell always celebrates our happenings and events —
As do I, never forgetting, finding ways even if money is tight!
Cards from the cats (how do they get out to shop?),
silly things that make each feel known to the other.
Homemade breakfasts, edible goodies, surprises on my computer board.

This year he celebrated mine by gifting me with a pen I’ve wanted for a couple of years,
and just won’t spend the dollars on… It is a thing of beauty!
Fire engine red like a shiny Christmas ball,
and engineered in a way that makes my architect’s heart sing.
I have some lovely red ink samples coming from Vanness to find the best red for it —
Diamine and Robert Oster and KWZ and Akkerman!

This birthday was a turning point for me.
You know how they talk about the big 5-0 or the big 6-0?
This is the birthday where I actually felt the shift in my time on the planet.
My mom can’t remember anything and so of course,
I didn’t hear from her on my birthday.
But also, the family members who might remember my actual birth are
either dead or incommunicado… Not quite the last one standing but close.

So this birthday I let go into a different period of my life,
and let go of expectations of connectedness with family.

It was nice to hear from my niece and friends.

I am now journaling around my images, but as I have extended family
still living I am not sharing the journal entries.

Hahnemühle Nostalgie Sketchbook,
Lamy Joy with De Atramentis Document Black ink,
Platinum Carbon Pen with Platinum Carbon ink waterproof cartridges.

Inktober 17, Slowstitch

I am thrilled with the movement of slowstitch —
A movement which celebrates hand-stitching and mending.
I’ve never liked sewing machines and love hand-stitching…
why I do this for others in our business!

I always wondered about the difference between quilting by hand —
which was the way it was done originally, obviously —
and the way people do it today, both in connecting the pieces of fabric
and in the overstitching or quilting.
I get why they want the ease, but for me the point would be to do it slowly.

I’ve found my peeps, and now have models for doing this very slow stitchery,
and have gained tips and a comradely in a community stitching very very slowly!
I also found many wonderful sellers of dyed fabrics using plant materials.
Many sell bits of fabric and lace and old tablecloths and yarns to add to a collection of fabrics to make into small quilts or to use in mending.
I bought my first one this last week.

This was the first package I bought, from a wonderful woman in Germany.
Her package was as beautiful as the many bits which were hand dyed!

I love the color goldenrod creates… a warm green-yellow!
Exactly the color of Platinum Citrus Black, which I diluted and used as paint!

The lovely package was created by Heike Gerbig.
