Full Moon #notinkober

Full Moon….

Two inks….

Robert Oster Thunderstorm ink and a whole lotta water in the center:
Letting ink do what it will.
Robert Oster Green at Night ink to create the trees in front of the moon.

On this strange day we also found out POTUS has Covid.
I’m going to leave it at that but had to put it into my art journal.
All ink, and taken from a picture by Debi Taylor.
Inks on the side…

Rona2: One More

I thank several photographers for posting almost the same iconic image of the police
lined up nightly before they declare a riot and go after protesters.

Kinktober 2020

This year, I am not doing Inktober, but KINKtober,
which is both because 2020 is a truly crap year,
and that is my initial in front of inktober…
but then I saw the company I would be in and
it is a little outside my wheelhouse!
I like #FPtober (FountainPens-tober)
but Mitchell came up with #inkartober and I like it!
.

I hope to play with a different ink most nights, and push them in new ways…
I’ll tell you what I used and what, if any thing I learned.
This was created with my beautiful Platinum 3776 with a music nib
She is named Guadalupe, and filled with Monteverde Horizon Blue ink.

With all the division and rioting and anger, I want to start with Buddha.
I call him Buddhaball in all seriousness, because I like that he is a ball,
and that I don’t attach any emotions to him… I leave this open to interpretation.
Others like Weeping Buddha or Humble Buddha.

Rona2: Rallies Portland

I follow @maranierae (you should too) on Instagram, and thank her for the images.

I still work full time in our business and we have a war going on in our city
between right-wingers, law enforcement, and blacks. I’ve not seen anything like it
in my lifetime and it is not being well reported and this has caused me so much distress. But what helps is sketching it… From pics, because at my age with arthritis
I am not going out and hanging out in a protesting war zone but I have a few
reporter friends that let me sketch from pictures and I choose the ones that make me
sad or feeling hopeless and then sketch them in m own ways. It is healing.

The far right showed up for a rally in the heart of a black residential neighborhood,
on a day when a rally about black history in Portland was to take place.
1500 blacks (and supporters) showed up, no weapons, no issues at all… peaceful.

Down the street 300 extremists came armed to the teeth.

The signs at the Proud Boys rally are all about the right to be armed,
about hating liberals lefties, and blacks, and about Jesus and Trump.

This one chilled me.  He is praying, but he is praying fully armored,
dressed in my flag’s colors, which to me symbolize a land where we are all from
different religions and are all different colors and yet share certain inalienable rights
to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness… and I want POC to have all that too
without me being privileged because I am white.

The war is on here, and the warriors appear to be the right-wingers and frankly,
law enforcement, who nightly call riots where I see none (lots of raw footage on IG) and then proceed to push, bully, toss, batter abuse and then arrest both protesters and press, medics, and lawyers.  Not Proud Boys.  They say it is BLM but mostly they protest by burning a trash can in the street *bonfire) ot sometimes tag a building.  They don’t pull weapons on anyone.  I am horrified at this country I’ve called home

I draw because making the marks
helps me process the fears and anguish
at what I am witnessing.

We are not a humanity.
I don’t know what we are.

Rona2: VSW Sydney AU

Debi Taylor is taking us on a VIRTUAL walk through Sydney.

This is what they call a “bin chicken” but it is really a white Ibis;
we did a challenge of about 10 minutes and I did 12 NIC dry time.

I think it is working…
or maybe it is that I am just moving my pen,
making marks, and that lifts depression?
But bold and bright is here to stay!

Oriental poppies coming in these watery
flavors are just delicious…

I found an image of a field of poppies
and picked out two to draw…

finding them in the field was a meditation…

You can see I used them in an earlier sketch too;
I think I liked them better there…

Stunning Days

After months of,covid and blm protests and bad reporting…
then 10 days of fear of fires and all that that entailed…

Ruth Bader Ginsburg died.

I have nothing new to say.
It’s all been said on social media and by the pundits and the press…
I didn’t draw her because I wanted to try and get a good image, but because her passing,
and she was a beloved hero of mine, had to be marked in my journal.

I am ready for what’s coming.

I am sorry I didn’t do her justice.

Inky Thots: Robert Oster Heart of Gold

I am not a gold gurl (silver is my jam),
not even a glitter gurl (well, sometimes…)…

BUT I am loving Robert Oster’s line of shimmery golden inks.
This review is for Robert Oster Shake N Shimmy Heart of Gold!
(Shown above with and without flash so you can see the glitteries!)

I own Robert Oster Shake & Shimmer Aussie Liquid Gold ink
(which I reviewed earlier),
and also want Shake & Shimmer Grün Gilt ink.

It is all you expect from Robert Oster inks —
well behaved, doesn’t feather, nice flow and even dries in a medium time!
I find that if I store the pens laying flat the inks do not clog the pens:
Occasionally  I take a bit of pliable plastic and floss the nib/feed connection,
or flush that area.  So far my pens accept this ink.

Remember that others review these inks just for writing;
I am also interested in how they are used for ink-painting!

There are lovely colors that emanate from this shimmery ink
when it is hit with water (top and below)…
Very different from the Aussie Liquid Gold which stayed in the yellow-gold ranges.
This exposed deep burnt charcoal grey with touches of turquoise and green!

The paper towel test
shows how many colors
lay in this burnished gold…
When the edge is touched with water it moves easily
into the range of fall colors!
The gold floats on top
like gilding!
Looking at watercolor comparisons, below, I offer Daniel Smith’s Monte Amonte Sienna, Burnt Umber, Indian Yellow, Sap Green, and Green Gold; Blick’s Sepia; and Holbein’s Quinacridone Gold.
The pigments fall into in the following Munsell ranges:

PO48, PY150; PO48, PY150; PY108, PG7, PO49; and PG36, PY150, PY3.
*For more info on the munsell system, go to this page.  Knowing the pigments can
help you not to duplicate watercolors made of the same pigments.*

*Above, watercolors, from Daniel Smith and Holbein.*

Above, a fossilized shell painted on Hahnemühle Watercolour Journal
paper using a Pentel Aquash waterbrush;
a dip pen was used to highlight some of the edges of the fossilized shell.

Friends of mine quickly sketched on Hahnemühle Cappuccino Sketchbook
with a Jinhao pen with a stub nib, and Pentel Aquash waterbrushes.
The Cappuccino paper is really not meant for watercolor,
but showed the shimmer ink surprisingly well.

RO is experimenting and testing lightfast properties
but this ink is not listed as such…
MOST water soluble ink companies do not pay attention
to these things
because most artists who use ink
are making prints of their work to sell.

His inks are non-toxic.

I have more Robert Oster inks than any other brand. Why?  Because no other brand has the complex and spectacular mix of pigments within a color, which gives even his simplest inks such beauty to with which to sketch and paint that it is a shame to waste them on writing!

His bottles are not the most beautiful, but I am happy
they are environmentally friendly bottles, created
from recycled chemical waste! This matters to me;
I started with fountain pens to stop the plastic pen trash.
I can get the fattest pen into them to refill on the go.
Yes, they are a bit tippy.  I don’t care.  Robert Oster does not use boxes. As mine all go into the trash, I am happy not to cut down a tree for a box around a bottle!

doodle flowers
this one was white but that just
bored me so I got to play god/dess

and wrap that pretty shape in
yellow and oranges and cheerful colors!

right now several days are attacking at once
and each day feels overwhelming
and doodling unreal fantasy flowers is my antidote…

Rona2, Anti-Depression Posies, Three

This little pen changed everything.
Vintage Pelikan P20 Twist Fountain Pen (while they are still available)
with its soluble black ink and a nib that slides on the paper (for about $10) is such a joy!
I use the empty cartridge (it cannot take a converter) and can refill them with a syringe.
I used to draw with a Platinum Carbon Pen or a Lamy with waterPROOF ink,
but on the toned paper I tried out my little parrot-colored joyful pen
and the way the ink interacted with the watercolors on top was so interesting…

For these I used the Platinum Carbon Pen for the first layer of doodling,
then went in and selectively placed some of the Pelikan black ink
where I thought it would be interesting to mix with
the bright purple-pink watercolor and fresh green leaves…
you can see it in the grey moving into purple above and below.

Messy-messy just like life right now
and chaotic… a total release!

Sitting in brown skies is getting to me…
Had to stop drawing fires skies and move to posies…
They lift the spirit to doodle them…

Making my own field up,
flowers that won’t grow together
and oh they make me happy.

Meanwhile:

It’s All Going to Pot, by Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard

Well, it’s all going to pot
Whether we like it or not
The best I can tell
The world’s gone to hell
And we’re sure gonna miss it a lot

All of the whiskey in Lynchburg, Tennessee
Is just couldn’t hit the spot
I gotta hundred dollar bill, friend
You can keep your pills
‘Cause it’s all going to pot

That cackle-bobble-head-in-a-box
Must think I’m dumb as a rock
Readin’ daily news
While I’m kickin’ off my shoes
It’s scarin’ me outta my socks

there is more… but this says it all… thanks to willie and waylon

Rona2: Oregon on Fire

There is not a lot to say…
You’d have to have been in a coma not to know what is going on
as Oregon has made world news for months,
and now it is all about the fires.

The skies are either grey-white or brown-grey…
Everything is seen through a brown fog
and after a long day my throat hurts…

Rona2: Rochester and Portland

I follow @maranierae (you should too) on Instagram, and her posts on the Rochester
protests compelled me to see the Daniel Prude video for myself.
I wept.
I was sorry I’d watched it before bed…
but if I am horrified and heartbroken to have witnessed this lynching,
my heart pain is nothing compared to the pain his brother must feel
to have called the police to help him with his mentally ill brother and
know he called them to torture and lynch him…
The worst thing was the aftermath, when they lightheartedly talked about
“These things happen…” I’d like to get the quote right but cannot see that video again.

I was alone as Mitchell was asleep.
I roughly sketched this while weeping.
Putting it into my sketchbook helps me to process what
I am witnessing.

I still could not sleep, and so continued drawing and listening to videos
first from @maranierae (her image inspired the sketch above)
then to @pdxgabs and @r3evolutiondaddy and beyond.

Back to an image from @maranierae of Mike Hastings…
I listened to his impassioned speech while adding color…
He’s earned the right to talk to these immature cops who talk about the protests as riots —
Bronze Star for his work as a medic in Vietnam in the army, and now a retired RN, showing up and tried to get through to the humanity of the PPB…

They have none.

We are not a humanity.
I don’t know what we are.

Rona2: 100 Days of Protest, 2

I also listened to speeches given by various BLM activists.
None call for violence,
and in fact call for passive resistance, staying together,
and what to do when the PPB arrests you in violation of your right
to free speech and freedom to peacefully assemble.

I watched videos by pdxgabs, r3volutiondaddy, and others of the same scenes:
Portland Police and State Police who have been made federal agents
by Kate Brown so that they could arrest Press, Medics
and others who are doing their jobs and used to be protected by that clause,
dragging peaceful but noisy protesters, beating them bloody in a few cases.

It makes me sick, depresses me and is in fact defeating.
If this is what law enforcement in a supposedly liberal town
has come to then we are indeed lost.

We are not a humanity.  I don’t know what we are.

No one can blame this one on Trump.
This is Oregon State and City of Portland…
