NOTE: For those that might be visiting from Restore Oregon,
I am speaking largely to other painters and student painters in my blog.)
Rivoli Theater at 1355 S Main Street, Pendleton, Oregon was built in 1900.
It is a significant part of the original streetscape of the old downtown. In its heyday, the Theater served as a social and economic center of community life in Pendleton and Eastern Oregon. Restore Oregon is donating toward that goal…
This rendering was not as easy because of the tiny size of the postcards and images.
I imagined the hillsides behind Main Street USA with no homes on them in 1900.
BTW, I used DS Primateks in every color mix created except the light grey wash:
Lapis, Serpentine, Diopside, Yavapei, Minnesota Pipestone, Piemonite, and Hematite.
Even on the Rivoli, I added a touch of Yavapei to warm the Holbein Warm Grey.
THEN, a tad bit unsatisfied (I don’t usually do realistic renderings without a twist anymore),
I wanted something to show the spirit and excitement of the theater.
My mom spoke of the excitement of going to the moves as a kid;
I wanted an image that invoked that as well! Finally, middle of the night,
I played with Fineline Masking fluid, using it like paint, then splashing colors over the image, dripping
and plopping color, capturing movement and lights! I like them
— I created several at once.

It’s a neat and beautiful series you have going. I love the Marquee signs. Especially the very first one.

I like what you did with the Rivoli Theater painting, Katie. You really added a dimension of excitement to it.

Thanks Mary — that is what I felt was missing in the rendering. Imagine people going ot thos romantic swashbuckling talkies in the early days!

Right! Wouldn’t you like to be there?

Well I certainly have a large part of me that think I am more suited (other than my feminist tendencies) to live in that era. I wouldn’t want to be in Pendelton Oregon… too hot. But if I could live in Laguna Beach (home) I would love to go back in time!
