Note: I am writing a story/journal that I don’t want to show before it is published in full. These are some of the illustrated pages in the sketchbook for the story.
Sammy lounging as he is allowed to do occasionally
on a piece that is destined for complete undressing,
as is this long curved 50’s Lawson-style sofa.
Checking us out through his unfocused slits.
He is uncharacteristically sprawling out of
Kamala’s bed on top of the seat deck.
He is, unfortunately, banished from the studio
once upholstery work begins.
He complains softly but persistently.
For now, the sofa is all his!
I am getting braver about painting
Sammy and Kamala, black cats!
This piece was created in conjunction with
30 paintings in 30 days,
keeping me moving on my book!
Moleskin 8×11 watercolor journal.
Materials used Pentalic HB woodless pencil, white Uni-ball gel pen, Platinum Carbon pen, and my new Hero pen (thanks Cathy Johnson!) with Platinum Carbon and Atramentis Document inks, and Greenleaf & Blueberry, QoR, Holbein and Daniel Smith watercolors.

I think it mus be hard to capture the beauty of a black or black and whit cat. We have always had these cats in our house. Their beauty is curious.

plus the whole black on black — jet black is hard to paint. where are the shadows? the delineation? so i just started, and got over my intimidation.

Such a satisfied face on that one. Sweet!

We thought he might never sweeten up — he was a terror as a kitten, and with the whole blind-in-one-eye thang he was so very very cautious! Now he is a huge sweety.
