Sammy Meditating

Not these days… He is hearing the crazy cats down the hall in the studio and
watching at the door to see if we bring someone into his space…

He’s dropped weight and tests came back and no indicators,
so we think it is all about grieving and stress.

SOON!  Maybe a week and he gets to meet them!

VSW: Hahnemühle Floral Post Cards, 2

Last month’s Every Day in May challenge, and my requiring no pencil, has a hold over in that as I am stressed and busy I continue with just a sketch of anything I pull out of the bag of images, grab the ink water-brushes, and have at it.  Wonky is fine, just getting a sketch down every day, keeps my hand in it and relaxes my mind away from the stresses.

Each one is a mini exploration of color and linework.

Some turn out lovely, like this contour drawing of the Marigold.
That is always a nice surprise!  But even the ones that I didn’t like to begin with, I end up seeing in a different light when I post them altogether, like the Bells at the top.

St.John’s Wort, sunny and bright!

VSW: Hahnemühle Floral Post Cards, 1

Working this months Virtual Sketchwalk
(all flowering thangs) on Hahnemühle Post Cards,
mostly directly in ink again, as I have no time so am doing quick sketches.
Pepper trees remind me of Canoga Avenue in the San Fernando Valley,
which was once lined with them.
Mitchell stole this one for his desk… Reminds him of his childhood too!

Posies in Super5 Dublin with inks and liquid watercolor washes.

CC’s Hollyhocks, and no, I did not do them justice!

I tell you, painting flowers is the antidote to all the crap news in the world!

Nostalgie Book 2017

I did more experimentation in this book than any other to date.
I also went back to my 40-year-old habit of writing and sketching…
Been doing that since boring architectural history classes.
I am sorry but had to leave a lot of written pages out,
but I went through some sad and serious events, journalled and made marks,
and do not write publicly about others.
I began to paint with inks in a big way in this sketchbook,
building on my diluted-inks in waterbrushes,
adding more liquid watercolors in waterbrushes.
So much fun to do quick sketches with!

Tools: Wrap-up on Hahnemuhle Nostalgie Sketchbook,

So another experiment.

I’ve been softening my ink and liquid watercolors by diluting them with water,
and decided to see what happened when I used them almost full strength.

AAACK!

Above, when the full-strength are softened with water…

After the initial crayola-crayon-gone wrong I just kept layering colors because really,
once it is garish you can’t ruin it so that became another experiment —
Just how many layers of color can a Hahnemuhle Nostalgie Sketchbook take?
A LOT A LOT A LOT and not bleed.

Which brings me to a wrap-up as I finish this journal…
I LOVE this journal.
I’ve now worked a whole Hahnemuhle Watercolour Book
and while it is true the watercolor paper in that book is excellent,
this lovely journal takes a lot of water thrown at it for a lighter-weight paper.
(I always clip my sketchbooks, not matter how thick the paper.)
Both journals took my constant flexing and bending (I am hard on a journal) and
the extra pages in this journal make it a a good price for such a formal looking journal.
(But don’t let it give you blank book syndrome… dive in and mess it up!)
The only thing I’d change is I’d love one of those nice bands they put on
the watercolor journals — so I can dispense with a fat clip!

I will be buying more, from WetPaint!

I will post the whole journal in the next couple days.

Nostalgie: Laundry

Susan posted a lovely image of red laundry hanging on a line, and the image swirled around in my head, and got me thinking about how much an image can evoke.
That single image brought back the smell of summer in San Fernando Valley,
laundry brought in and putting my face in the basket of clean clothes
and the smell of warmth held in its fiber, gold hills and oaks.

I sketched this in the middle of Every Day in May, and so many people spoke of freezing when they are drawing.  I looked at that. and thought of the ridiculousness of the inner critic to want explorations and practice in a sketchbook to be perfection.

Every Day in May, Ta-Dah!

gads turn off the sound!
mac is not letting me turn it off during export!

I haven’t done a prompt with challenges in a couple of years.
I have no trouble thinking of things to sketch and time is what makes
filling a sketchbook hard — I work at our business full-time.

So why do a challenge when I was swamped and stressed over a deadline on a huge project?   Because sketching is my second form of meditation (first is actual meditation), and it provides me a way to free my mind, calm my stress, enjoy my day.

To up the ante, I did no pencil —
NOT that I think pencil is a no-no — I’m not one of those people —
but pencil does slow me down, make me prepare mentally for a “good” sketch.
I wanted to just make it through the month still sketching every day, because I am doing a sketch a day even if I don’t post them (sometimes I can’t for privacy reasons.)

I chose a too-small Hahnemühle Watercolour Book —
I ordered the A6 size by accident — I don’t like small journals —
because as I started this I thought of the exercise as a throwaway.
It was a throwaway —
I threw away
judgements and perfection (10-minute sketches do that for you)!
I gained a fun finished journal, sanity during a long push,
an appreciation for small journals,
and even a few tricks I will continue with —
like more colored ink-in-waterbrushes (besides the greys for grisaille.)

My cover and commitment on the inside cover…

…my test pages for inks (you can really see that I started with my normal inks in waterbrushes — browns and greys — but then added a whole other page of colorful inks.
I started using them in waterbrushes two years ago, so I had color for the middle of the night!  Then I loved them for grisaille or brunaille…

And finally, my thoughts — which I often record at the end
of a journal looking back — but rarely share.

Jutta and admins, thank you for the best EDIM ever!

See You next year! The list, above.

Every Day in May: 31, Selfie

Gads, how to do a fun selfie?
I just learned how I can turn my camera around on my iPhone,
so I made several faces into the camera and drew from those.
Contour drawings, the first and third blind contours.
*gads they are the hardest to post
plugs me into my sense of beauty and self-worth
when do we really ever get over this crapola?*
I call them Monster, Kissy-kissy, and Jewish Wise Woman.

The middle one looks most like me.

THE END!
Tomorrow I will post a slideshow and
my reflections on this challenge.

Every Day in May: 30 Ugg

This one took the time for Mitchell to run into the post office to collect our mail.
Yes, I was uninspired by shoe… I’ve drawn shoe and not interested in shoe…
But hey, I was inspired by all Jutta’s other prompts!

ALMOST DONE!!!!!

Every Day in May: 29, Sammers

Trying to pick names for his playmates is hard;
Sammy was his name pretty fast,
though we tried to find a Vedic or Buddhist name for him…
Sam
Sammy
Sammerston
Sam Sam the Cat Cat Man
Sammers.

A good name needs many variations!

Every Day in May: 27, Something Old

Family gifts, something old, but the jade ball came in this lovely box from Firenze, Italy.
I think it was a gift for graduation or a birthday.
I loved the box more than the jade ball, truth be told.

I don’t know the story behind the box, never thought to ask.
I imagine it was bought in Laguna Beach at the jewelry store on Main Street.
Painted paper, about 2-inches square.
I finally sold the jade ball (I never wear it) but kept the box, in my keepsakes.

Every Day in May, 22, HaHaHaaa

DRAW something that makes me laugh…
Mostly it is a turn of phrase, a silly song Mitchell makes up, or a few completely hysterical movies.  Calvin and Hobbs (copyrighted).

So I listed the things that make me laugh, and spritzed them…
Jutta you stumped me — or maybe it was the deadlines and headlines making me serious?

Every Day in May, 23-24, Transparent Perfume

Had to draw transparent and perfume…
Mine usually comes in the form of creams but I do love the scents from Pacifica.

Every Day in May, 22, Mugs

Mitchell and I collected them before I knew how much fun they are to sketch.
We like big cups, and they have to feel good in the hand.
They have to be colorful or hand-painted.
There has to be one for each of us.
We’ve been doing this almost since we met, and we are picky about our cups!
Sometimes they are named.  “Happy Cups” or Rooster, as in,
“Let’s have Rooster today.”  or, “I think we NEED Happy Cups.”
We know what we mean.
We haven’t named these yet.  Too new.

Let’s talk about why I don’t buy Noodler’s inks anymore.  Period.
They are not reliably waterproof even when Noodler’s-man says they are.
You have to test them on EVERY paper.

Above, the cup lines were drawn with Diamine Grey, not waterproof, because
I wanted little touches of grey to move into the bright  orange paint.

But I did not want the words to run, so I switched to Noodler’s Lexington Grey ink.
I had not tested it in this book.  You can see how it ran, and I had intended to do something fun with the base but as it was running at the very touch of the brush,
I decided NOT.  This is why I only use De Atramentis Document (not Archival)
or Super5 inks (and I love their Frankfurt, but was too lazy to refill my pen, ouch).
They are both reliably waterproof, in that I’ve only had them move a bit if I just kept saturated with many layers of wash — and not as much as this!

Loving this Hahnemühle Watercolour Book paper,
and will start my new proper-sized journal soon!

Every Day in May: 20-21, Bike in the Park

Business is interfering with my posting life!

It is not walk in the park this week, deadlines and stress abound!
Drawing this from the top of my head was freeing, a trip outside at 1am!

This was going along nicely when the pen decided to BLOB in my nicely whimsical and lighthearted sketch.  Ah well, good save.  Embrace the wonky.

Have a good week every one…
It is about to turn into scorcher days, not my idea of a god time.

Every Day in May, 19, Buddha’s Feet

I went for something a bit more meaningful to me than my feet.
WAIT… oops, my feet are meaningful to me!  Where would I be without them?
“Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?”  Frida Kahlo

But I don’t want to draw my feet, so Buddha’s feet are my choice.
As I am the Buddha and the Buddha is me, they are my feet.
As close to a zen tangle as I will get.
I love putting some of my favorite quotes next to drawings;
I will do it more often!
I used Diamine Grey for the undersketch; KWZ Foggy green for the details.
Super5 Frankfurt in a waterbrush (diluted a bit) touched into the
KWZ ink and created the beautiful colors.  I adore both inks!

The list, above.
