I adore INKTOBER!

Robert Oster Hot Pink with a Moonman Glass Dip Pen.
This color is now to me.  It has a bit of a black-purple sheen
but then is brighter pink when writing or washing without a line.

And this Hahnemühle ZigZag Accordian Journal is done — on to the next one!

**INK case you missed it, this year, I am taking on a class on illustration,
and that class is requiring a commitment for two months.
I’m excited and a little sad I will miss Inktober…
but I made it very very easy for me.
I am using the itty-bitty 2-inch Hahnemühle ZigZag Accordian Journal
and keeping it simple, hearts to begin. Every day.  A simple commitment.

VSW: Amsterdam 9, Canals

Finished watercolor sketch, but this was done for a friend who is looking at how to treat windows… I apologize for the bad images – damn pencil is hard to photograph.) I tried to draw what goes on in my head as I think about buildings. I look for rhythms in the windows, and differences from one to another. in this case I also looked for the first floor, which because of the canals, is different than a city built not on water..

I might draw vertical guidelines, even if in my head.
BTW, I might also do this in a photograph if I was practicing, trying to think about all this stuff.  I’d look for the center line on each building.

Then I look at each building and see the rhythm of the window pattern, squares or rectangles?  Doors?  Balconies?  In this case, these buildings had very different window patterns, in size and shape as well.  I might count the panes to see the rhythm.

I start general — I don’t draw a lot of detail.  I stop when it feels right call it quits. If you look at the 4th & 5th drawing below, you will see how little I did to make a statement about the windows and doors.

Basic shapes and sizes tel a huge story…

Getting into more detail.  I did this all in  one medium nib pen size, but if I was doing this a bit more seriously (and had time), I might switch to a finer pen for the details.

Thanks to Brian Thompstone for the image.

Inktober: Mitchell and Mom

Not a fude pen, but a quick sketch in the middle of the night.
Not a very good likeness of either of them but that’s okay —  sketch is a sketch.
Michell ended up looking like a Scottish boy I dated in my 20’s,
and my mom looks like a nice little old lady — not at all who she was!
I am finishing off my Hahnemühle Cappuccino Sketchbook.

When I get time I will write a review, but I will say now that Hahnemühle never lets me down — excellent product, well made, nice paper for ink and pencil sketches!

Inktober: Mitchell Guitar and hating on Fude Pens

Fude nibs versus flex nibs?

I tried another quicky sketch…
Not thinking about inktober but that works too!
It isn’t the bad proportions that I hate
about this sketch (I mean, I might
have done better), it is that I can’t seem
to get the hang of the fude.

I love the Duke Fude compared to the Hero…
it is simply juicier.  While I can get the Hero to work now, it still isn’t as juicy as the Duke and needs frequent priming.

Right, me simply playing with lines.
The top two are the fudes, and the bottom
is one of my FPR flex nibs.
In my hands, the flex nib wins for
the ability to change line weights.

But I’ve not given up YET.

Fudes, top, versus
my favorite FPR Himalayan.

I am working in the Hahnemühle Cappuccino Sketchbook for the rest of the week…
Testing for Hahnemühle means I am likely to finish  the challenge.
I am not commenting about the paper until Sunday…

Note that if you visit to buy, the ink shown is quite different than what I received.
Not sure if this is quality control or the images on a computer screen,
though I find Vanness to be very close typically.

SoCS: Ground of Being

I  journal and do morning stream of consciousness exercises, and
I’m again participating in Linda Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday
I write to a timer, 15-20 minutes, no editing except spelling, and of course I add my art!
You can do it too!
The Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “ground.”

I have no time really.  Seriously.  On a damn deadline like you can’t believe.
And trying to walk though a class on a creative process to boot..

But when I heard this week’s word a few minutes ago, it struck me as I am struggling to understand how I could have been so very wrong about someone close to me.

There is a spiritual phrase, but also a practical phrase, their “ground of being.”
It is a bit bigger than intention, though that is certainly in there somewhere.
It is the essence of where you are coming from, where your heart is,
how you operate in the world… and I always thought that this one person had a
good ground of being when it came to me at least.

I was wrong.  Very very wrong.  And I am reeling from it,
trying to focus many scenes from my life, stories told to me, all through these new lenses.  Rug pulled out from under me…
What is true and what isn’t…
Who might have I wronged while believing in this person,
who was so close to me and
whose ground of being was actually detrimental to my well-being.

Anyhow, as I am busy and beading and painting and cooking and sleeping and showering
I am looking at the world through these lenses… and trying to figure this all out.

Thank god/dess I have Mitchell by my side.

For the rules, go to Linda’s blog;  feel free to join the fun!

Inktober: Mitchell and Fude Pens

I didn’t have time to commit to fully sketching for Inktober, but when possible
I have a pen with me, and I am trying to learn to use the fude pen.
So far, they are frustrating… and more frustrating.
Not bad for printing, but gads anything else and I hate them.
Then I see what a few friends are doing (Virginia Hein) and it drives me crazy.
Need. To. Figure. This. Out.

I am working in the Hahnemühle Cappuccino Sketchbook
I have not yet written my review…
