On the night when the full moon was supposed to be
invoking the ancestors (this is astrologically),
I found myself drawing all my grandmother’s thimbles
going back four generations.
My mother gifted them to me,
so though she doesn’t have her own,
she too is represented on those pages.
To Whom will I gift them?
They are so beautiful.
Clockwise: My grandma, Lyle Genevieve Smith Swartout (Mimi),
Great-Grandmother Smith, Great-Grandmother Hoyt,
Great-Grandmother Swartout, and Great-Great-Grandmother Smith-Sheridan.
The ink is one color (other than the writing at the end in Robert Oster Grey Seas),
and that is the surprising Birmingham Slag Grey, quickly becoming an everyday favorite.
All those other colors came out of that one ink!

I am very impressed with the variety you obtained from that one ink. The illustration is charming. How lovely that you have these thimbles that belonged to multiple generations of women in your family. That’s a real tangible connection to something they would have used frequently. One of my grans used to collect thimbles but they were decorative and ceramic.

It is now a favorite “grey” ink! I never saw the ceramic thimbles around, but then they were all seamstresses of some sort. I don’t know if you can use the ceramics thimbles.

I doubt they were ever used or intended to be used. We always had the rubber ones when I was growing up. I have a boringly plain metal one now.

That’s so sweet. If I could draw like you or print like you, I shouldn’t think I’d ever want to do anything else, but then, thimble and memory recounting is so very sweet.
