I was feeding the birds and as I tossed seed onto the shed roof of the dock I realized I startled a raccoon. I am glad I did, as s/he was heading toward Nicolai, which is not a good place for a critter to cross when the drivers are trying to get to work on time.
Seeing critters like this bring me to how far from So Cal I am —
In Santa Monica I sometimes saw coyotes if I was closer to the hills,
and often some of the wild parrots and macaws in the palms,
but never a raccoon. Thieves that climb!
I’m surprised I’ve never seen evidence of them on the shed roof,
as they used to sleep on our roof in So Oregon.
The first time I heard what sounded like gorillas overhead it scared me
until I realized what they were. Not that they can’t be dangerous —
I had a wee baby decide to take on my boot one day and had to laugh but also,
saw the ferociousness that I’d have to deal with IF it were fully grown.
