Sketch to ink to grisaille to underpainting (for brightness) to final watercolor!.
I spent a lot of time in Pasadena and love the Green Hotel!
Above, pencil sketches and a relaxed layout of the entry and one end of the building
inked with a Platinum Carbon fine fountain pen.
Grisaille with a diluted mix of Lexington Grey in a waterbrush (for ease).
I don’t like to muddy up my paint pans, but I have no trouble mixing washes
in the Eldajon Plastic Palettes that stack — I’ve tried others but these are my favorites.
The bright undercolor gives light to the colors placed on top.
Final watercolors of several greens including Primateks
(Serpentine, Dioxide and Jadeite) with more Primateks in the roof (Minnesota Pipestone) and sky and reflections (Lapis) and street and reflections (Hematite).
Video in the works!

That annoying loud-mouth editor/critic in your head? GONE! How great would that be?
That’s beautiful! The details are wonderful.
P.S. I really like that serving dish you’re using for your washes.

There is a link for the watercolor pan — I love them because I can stack them alternating directions…

I have two in my cart! I’m using a big palette and a square ceramic salad plate at the moment.
Thanks for the link!

Cool… Don’t buy 5ml tubes… swap with someone to try things. Too expensive!
This is how I use them…. I can put just a bit in each corner and mix away:
Also, don’t forget I talk about all my favorite paints under Tools…

Thanks for showing me this! I appreciate seeing it.
I did the same with the M Graham paints. I just put a drop of the paint on a plate and mixed to chart the colors. The following day I sprayed what was left on the plate and they came right back to life! A huge plus! 🙂
