Of course, a lot of my drawings for Inktober were created for my virtual Haight-Ashbury walk. This week, besides finishing that walk, I also had some fun creating the following:
The beginning of a post on delivering the Crater Lake CCC table to the National Park.
I am not so interested in drawing landscapes, but I am taking a class by Marc Holmes, and so chose to do his class exercises by working from photos of our turnaround trip!
The two images are of the simple line drawing, then adding darks with a brush pen.
The landcape is of the North Umpqua River, from the back road to Crater out of Roseberg.
My takeaway from Marc’s class this week is a huge reminder, his quote:
“Not everything has to be a work of art 🙂
Sometimes you’re just having fun sketching :)”
I’ve been pushing myself to get the hang of this and that ever since I took up water colors 20 months ago, and I think I forgot that. So middle of the night drawings below: cats.
Kamala and Jai are different as night and day,
Kamala will not let her image be captured. She can be in deep sleep but if I approach with drawing paper or camera, she begins to squirm then eventually moves on.
She is a vexation in most ways, but she is our vexation!
Jai is our old man, the sweetest bitey-boy ever. He is suffering from IBS, and has the runs almost all the time, and has had bouts of this for several years. We are working with a vet to get this under control. We used Newman’s Own Organic Cat Food with labels that said no carrageenan for many years, trusting their company. Then suddenly they “added” this ingredient, which we only found out when we were again reading ingredients to see if there was a food (like potatoes, duh) to which he might be sensitive. When we called them about it their vet told us they had it in the food since 2006 but had old labels printed so used the labels up! It is often the cause of holes in the gut, inflammation, even cancer!

And so, while we switched to a different pet food, we definitely don’t trust Newman’s Own corporation anymore for anything — if they won’t tell t he truth on labels why should we?
The thing is, that once they have this issue, it is hard to reverse, so our little guy is again at the mercy of a bad food company. Before it was the China scam with a poison placed into the food that mimicked protein when checked. These were top pet foods that were being made in China. Two cats and one dog later, we figured out what it was. So we switched to organic made-in-America (and lest you think that is expensive, try the bill for ER vets).
Don’t get me going.

Glad your kitty is being well fed and thanks for the warning. I love how you filled in the trees in the second sketch – awesome! And you kitty’s portrait is so wonderful. Great style!

Thanks. I find it very hard to catch my guys. Maybe it is because I often am sketching them in the middle of the night with just a night-light while M sleeps!

Wow! Now I’ve got to run to the fridge to see what we’ve got in there. We buy organic foods, and I didn’t know about carrageenan.

Yes. Having walked through this on our cats level, we quickly dumped all carrageenan products. Julie’s makes great ice creams and frozen yogurt products without them — Mostly you will find them in canned foods and milky foods, from our experience. Yogurt!
