Last Saturday we infilled missing color to the historic shellac. It is one of the few times when Mitchell had time to play a bit more than I did, and he took great images of the details around the Legislative Building (which I will paint!) On our way out we took a drive to Capitol Park, a lovely park below the Washington State Capitol. I had just enough time to paint the Capitol on an early autumn day before heading back home.
The first time through I sketched then laid in color, above.
The second watercolor I simply dropped colors quickly.
I have my favorite of the two — do you?
Drawn in an Stillman & Birn Delta journal
with a Brown-Black Uni-ball pen and Daniel Smith / QoR watercolors.

It’s wonderful to take a wonderful trip to a city I’ve never been to… and all without airports or heavy overweight luggage!
Fantastically stunning watercolours. If I really had to chose a favourite (and it’s certainly hard to do with these two) I’d chose the first I think.
Thanks for sharing… enjoy your weekend ;D

Beautiful sketches, and I enjoyed your journal notes about working in the Capitol. Such a different perspective from the typical visitor.

beautiful! i just tried the Stillman & Birn papers, do you love this series for watercolor? I’m not sold on the samples. Perhaps the larger page is better? Do you find that they buckle? I’m currently using the Fabriano/Artistico HP 140

Hi Jean — I am new to S&B and I love the Delta series. I have a Zeta on the way and use Beta too. They are affordable and the papers take a LOT of water. Two posts in the Beta journal: https://dkatiepowellart.me/2014/08/22/a-trip-through-psus-farmers-market-lobster-mushrooms/ and https://dkatiepowellart.me/2014/08/19/back-to-watercolors-buddha-maya/. I love that they do a square journal — I love squares. I want them to make a landscape journal similar to Moleskins. My other favorite is Arches . . .
